LINGsCARS.com & the ASA

Just been reading this thread over on PH:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/t...ing+%2D+THANKS

Briefly, the thread is about a PHer who made a vindictive complaint to the ASA about a spoof advert on Lings website about leasing a brand new DeLorean car.

The resultant letter/email exchange between Ling and the ASA is a joy to read, and is absolutely hilarious.

http://www.lingscars.com/images/pdf/asa2.pdf

I know Ling will be along shortly, so thanks for the entertainment

Just read beginning to end. What a stunning waste of the taxpayers money. Personal details of the idiots involved being posted is however perhaps a step further than I'd have gone, but heck.

What an amazing way to get a huge amount of free advertising, FWIW.

Absolutely brilliant. Go Ling.

'Theres hundreds of them emailing me, like Zulu's.'

I dunno how she gets away with it. The whole thread manages to strike the perfect balance between very intelligent and extremely stupid.

Surely though the ASA is just doing their job. If it clearly breaches rules, then it should be taken down.

Whilst it's funny, she's the one being the arse by wasting time...

This is probably the best marketing campaign she has ever run!

It's the old faithful - make the Regulator look silly and pedantic trick. The press will always leap on this type of stuff.

She'll do more gorilla marketing until the hype dies down. A small court fee in the scheme of this exposure is worth it's weight in gold..

So I assume I can do the same to BMW as that motorised pram they had on the site on 1/4/2013 is apparently a joke!

Just shows how rules and processes are all well and good but common sense on when to apply them should always be used. Total waste of time and money. Well done Ling for exploiting the lumbering processes of such a costly and impotent organisations.

What's a bit ironic is that the ASA have no jurisdiction over my own company website. They can only ask traditional media to stop accepting this DeLorean joke advert, which is obviously not what's happened.

They ignored my advice that this was a malicious complaint.

It's a complete waste of time, apart from the great publicity (for me).

Amazing.

So Ling, I assume so but am not sure. Were you being sarcastic with all that upset about the attention and the 1,000s of visitors to your site?

I would kill for this type of viral advertising for my site!

I guessed so but you were actually quite convincing in your act and have good will power to keep it up for so long.

I guess if we could see your face as you typed those e-mails it would have been rather more obvious.
