318d Fuel Consumption

Does this seem right?

I've got a E91 318D Auto and with what I would call a 'combined drive' (bit of motorway and bit of country road/towns i'm getting back a constant 36 mpg! If I drive as economically as I can, i still only average about 40

Seems a bit low to me?

I've had the girlfriends Mini JCW for the past few days, and i'm getting 33 out of that, and i've not been hanging around!

Your thoughts would be appreciated guys please!

Combined drive with my old 320d of mainly motorway saw 44 to 48mpg. Something doesn't sound right.

My remapped 118d does 47mpg similar sounding journeys to you, but it's a manual

My E90 320d manual averages 40mpg with 80% town, 20% motorway driving. OK it's a 177bhp ED engine but 36 does sound low for a 318.

Big difference between motorway and town driving. Mines a 320d auto (177) and the maximum I have acheived is 56.5 mpg over c120 miles - all motorway.

All town driving in winter got me 36 mpg. Overall, with a bit of both, you are likely to get c44 mpg - but you have to drive fairly steadily.

318d manual here, 80 gives back 60mpg with a load.
60 will realise 67mpg for the same.

that doesnt sound right to me either, id get it looked at. id expect much better economy than that from the 18d as that unit is supposedly built for the economy!

Def somthing wrong, my 318d is a manual, drive 10-15 miles to and from work in a city and occasional motorways/A roads and my average has never dropped below 50mpg. I can get 600-700 miles from a tank easy.

Actually i would say it could be right.

The wife has a brand new 118d (manual) and she only does short trips. It averages 29mpg.

I was worried it wasn't right so took it on a long run where it returned 65mpg.

So it all depends on the type of driving you do.

Thanks for your advice guys - in reply to Ti Rich, I took my 318 on a long trip down to Bath (220 Miles) and with cruise control set at 80 all the way, it averaged 44 :s, which isn't bad but i expected more!

I'm getting about 500 miles max on a tank. It also feels a bit powerless, but it is only 143hp!

I'm gonna drop it in tomorrow and let them have a look!

That's not right then. My 330d will do about 43mpg at 80mph on a run.

I think you are answering your own questions here.

80mph and expect good economy out of an 318d auto? The 318d manual saloon does 53.9mpg (on test) at 70-mph motorway cruising. The auto at 80-mph will fair much worse.

Feels powerless... if you you are working a small engine/auto hard, economy evaporates, always has and mpg is no better than a big engine with an auto box attached.

Remember at higher cruising speeds the bigger engined cars can get virtually the same mpg as the 'baby' engines. They can run lower boost due to plenty of torque at low throttle settings and benefit from higher gearing.

Don't get hung up on comparisons with others either, no two drivers have the same driving. One mans 'town' driving is another's 'heavy urban', at double the consumption.

Well recently did some 500 miles from one tank in my 318i and I think I was driving the car at about 80mph average also some hard driving. I don't know if that is about right. I am sure if I do 70mph then I will certainly get another 50miles out of it maybe more.

Right, took the car in today, and they found a couple of faults.... Can't remember exactly what but something to do with the amount of fuel given to the engine! Will post up the details later

Anyway, on the drive back home I've managed an average of 46mpg which I'm happy with, and that's mainly country roads and a massive hill in the middle!

Also, I got a lovely X5 40d M Sport as my courtesy car

that explains why when i get a loan car for my x5 i get a 318d!
i get on a good run 600+ on a tankful but it is 85 litres and tried the supershell stuff which cost 115 quid to fill up!
normal spirited commute 5 mile stop start and 30m motorway twice daily will return 450 + miles to tank funny but when i bought it i was only getting mid 20's then had it evolved and now get low 30's

FWIW, the reality is a lot different though Pete.
I just did a 200 miler at a GPS 70mph, almost all motorway and loaded up and saw an indicated 62mpg.
On a refil it worked out pretty close on paper calculation too, in fact slightly better.

Smart little car this.

I think of it as 'offsetting'.

Against the 335i weapon of mass consumption.

Same problem

I have the same problem. I cannot get the car above 38mpg no matter how I drive. Do you know what he exact problem was. Mine is also the 318d 143bnp.

PS I only use the cheapest of cheap supermarket Diesel too from Sainsbury.

Been tearing about lately and the wife runs it into town at weekends.

Still an easy 60mpg (real)
