E90 N46 engine cut out

Got in the car this morning and after 300yards theres a right hand corner. go round it like I always do but the engine dies for a second and then bursts back into life along with some warning lights on the dash. EML comes on briefly then goes off within seconds.

this was then repeated eve time I took a low/medium speed right hander.

Pics of warning lights attached.

Took it to my local Indy who suggested the first thing might be to brim the tank to see if its a fuel pickup problem. No change.

He mentioned it may be a drive shaft or a wheel speed sensor.

Has anyone had this happen before?

Sounds like the dsc cut in and limited engine torque.only does this on right hand bends?can it be replicated turning right and driving in small circles?Seen this before on an e9x was an abs sensor wire fractured and would only arise when steering was turned.also correct tyres fitted,correct pressures etc,the RPA lamp will come on as consequence of the dsc fault.

Cheers Kris. Haven't tried driving round in circles yet but it is driving me round the bend! only on right hand bends currently. roundabouts, turning right at junctions etc, Not noticed it on swooping bends or higher speeds though.

Its not so much limited engine performance, it completely cuts out. 0 revs.

All tyres are the same, all pressures correct (Checked this morn)

Where was the fractured wire out of interest? ill see if I can see anything.

Completely cuts out?!That is strange.Usually first thing that comes to mind is fuelling/tank slosh/etc
Another idea is perhaps there's water in the ebox under the bonnet and when you're turning the water is perhaps shorting something in the DME control unit.This could also bring on dcs/EML/RPA lamps as communication has been briefly interrupted.
The ebox is under the bonnet at N/S .
As regards to the abs sensor fault I mentioned it was the abs sensor wire that is clipped onto to the strut then makes its way down to the hub/sensor itself.Can be viewed by turning steering on full lock.

Yep, completely cuts out, If im on the clutch at the time you can see the revs drop to 0.
Tank slosh was the Indies first thoughts, but even with a brimmed tank the problem persists.

Kris. Water in the ebox sounds like a possibility, There was a lot of rain and standing water on my drive home last night and the NS inner arch flap is missing got a replacement yesterday as it happens. Ill have a poke about.

Also have a look at the ABS wires.

No probs,but if you're wheel arch flap is missing could definately be a possibility water had found its way in!

Assuming it has, what would you recommend? obviously dry it out but would you advise any sort of contact cleaner / water replant be used?

Mike ,if you're checking connections ye and you find corrosion/water then yeah electrical contact cleaner is you're best bet.I certainly use it in the dealership and have never had issues.

your indy should read the codes. (via proper BMW code reader or autologic and not other equipment).

Sounds like Crankshaft sensor failure.

But only when turning right?

I had a cam chain fitted a couple of weeks ago after it was throwing up an exhaust cam sensor fault which I could read using my ODBII. No such codes being thrown up now.

I did replace the exhaust cam sensor prior to the chain, however it was 1/10th of the price that BMW wanted so doubt its OE. I still have the old one, think its worth throwing the old one back in to discount this as a problem??

Cam chain filter is different to crankshaft filter AFAIK.
I'd do what Kris mentioned to start with.
If no luck, then I will start looking at what you have changed recently.

For crankshaft sensor, you do get error but you cannot read that via generic obd reader. BMW tools (inpa) or Autologic.

It may read the code, one your car stops and fails to restart and engine light is on.

Crankshaft sensor would make sense as regards to the momentary cutting out, but it's strange only occurs going right. If that was the case there would definately be a fault logged too.

Kris
It does but not read on generic obd reader. I am under the impression that OP has generic OBD code reader which reads the code, when engine light is on.

Yeah those obd2 type readers only 'skim the surface' so to speak. I had one a while back and tried it on my 330-no faults.Got it to work, put it on ISIS and there was a screen full !!

True, EML was on when the code was readable. as its not now it may be worth getting it done properly.

Mentioned it to a mate in the trade who immediately thought water too. Ive had a brief look but need a torx to remove the skuttle to have a good look in the ebox.

Fingers crossed its something simple as although I love the car its about to get part ex'd if there's any more problems with it.

10 points to that man! 1"+ of water in the ebox. Havnt been able to test drive yet but I cant see how that wouldn't cause a problem!

It has outer covering and then sealed cover inside.

I've seen the seals fail on them Makkan, water build up due to clogged drain channels and gets into ebox.

No problems always worth checking the o/s and n/s under bonnet drains. usually fill ip with moss / leaves/ crud etc
