e92 Auto Shifter Aluminum trim Removal?

anyone know if you can remove the silver aluminum piece on the auto shifter? i would take a flat head to it, but don't want to break anything if there's a sure shot way to do it. The aluminum coating on my has warn down over time so its almost two toned.

i'm looking to remove it, sand it down, and have it match the piano black interior that i have painted on my trim like the picture below.

just wrap it in gloss black vinyl. it's a small enough piece where it'll be hard to tell the difference when looking at it.

that does look nice though. mines just recently starting to show signs of wear too

You have to pry the bottom off and then pull it out....Once it out you need to use beta link to glue it back...How do I know this because I installed a nitrous switch to the AT knob in my car

the shifter trim is actually a pretty good size/shape to help get comfortable with wrapping vinyl. I say you go for it and try it.

If you are going topaint it you don't need to take the aluminum piece off. Just take off the whole shift knob, sand, tape, and paint.

Hey all I'm new to the forum, I know this is an old post, but I literally just removed the aluminum trim piece thanks to cn555ic. So I took a flathead and placed it at the groove between the leather and the trim, started separating very very gently and slowly. Once I was able to peel it up a little from the bottom, I looked in with the flashlight and noticed there were some clips about a quarter of the way up the trim piece, and I figured it they broke, I'd glue them back. There were another 2 clips closer to the top as well but if you pry slow enough and are gentle, the clips will come out without breaking. I did end up breaking one of the clips at the bottom, no worries though!

After I pulled it out I realized the best method would have been to loosen it a little, and then push the bottom upwards to slide it out, but it would have been really difficult to push up on the small bottom part of the trim piece without fear of breaking the plastic.

Here's a picture of them seperated! Hope this helps!

Flow415, thanks so much for posting. Looking to cover the center silver piece with suede leather to match the steering wheel cover I am installing in my daughter’s e90. Hopefully you post will help me not break it. I do have an extra knob form the junkyard to try this on.
