Rattling from engine
Hey guys, I am pretty new to owning a turbo'd BMW (just got my 335 a month ago) and I was hoping you could help me with a weird sound I am hearing.
Not all the time but typically when I've driven the car for more the 10-15 minutes, when I turn it off I hear a rattling from the engine bay. It sounds like something winding down but the sound is odd, like a rock in a tin can. Not sure if this is a normal sound for these cars when being turned off or if it is genuine cause for concern. Also, I've taken the vehicle to the dealership and they said it checks out just fine but with about 6 months left on the warranty I want to be as careful as possible. Car Info: 2009 BMW 335i (E92), 6mt, ~38k miles Thanks in advance for your help, any input is much appreciated. |

Clarification:
Is this something that happens as the engine stops spinning, or continues after the engine is shut off and "winds down". I think what onebadmofo is referring to is actually the dual mass flywheel. It's pretty common if that's what it is, and it's easy to check if that's what you're hearing by shutting down while holding the clutch. The DMF "rattle of death" should also sound more like it is coming from under the car than in the engine bay. If it winds down after the engine has stopped spinning the first thing I'd check is your main fan to see if any of the blades strikes anything during rotation. |

Much appreciated guys, I was thinking it was the DMC, as I've never had one in a car before but figured it was better to be safe than sorry. I'll keep an eye on it just in case and check out the fans.
