If in fact both systems are the Stereo (6-speakers, no external amp) then the only difference should be having iDrive or not.

i realise that in principle it should be the same, but in reality the difference is like chalk and cheese.

i wonder if they used better components or if the radio has a higher output ?

Due to the limit in the amount of power you can generate with 12V and a given speaker set, there's no way it has more power.

I'm guessing that the 2006 did not have the "happyface" EQ curve that we see in the 2010/2011 Stereo coded HUs over here.

But unless you find someone with a line-level audio analyzer setup, it might be hard to test.

Having iDrive means that the Stereo system does not have the cap in the mid speaker in the door and the output power is 25W per channel. Having the Professional/Business HU means that the Stereo system do have a cap in the mid speaker in the door and the output power is 15W per channel.

It could be possible that the speaker were changed in production to a better sensitivity set.

Yeah, you've posted that before - but using a 4-ohm speaker as an example, and assuming no switching power supply, a BTL amplifier is gonna be about the same amount of power - about 12W using hi-fidelity standards, and about 20W using when-lightning-strikes standards. Can't go above that without a switching power supply.

The CCC/CIC uses a different amp IC than the Professional/Business HU, both in power and in load handling. I have not opened one to find out which specific IC is, but the mere fact that a cap is required with the HU and not with the CCC/CIC/M-ASK tells me that it must be more robust and powerful than the IC in the HU.

I don't think that the HU puts out even those rated 15W as it really hurts the speakers when you raise the bass over 7 out of 10 with a bassy song, if my experience with a 2010 328i is the norm.
