E92 Oil Change as per Bimmer Magazine
Hey everyone... was just reading the new june bimmer magazine. They have an article reviewing the e92 335 and steve dinan has a line or two stating that the car overheats after about 3 laps on a track. Article goes on further to say the 15k first oil change is too long of a time period, they rec a first at 1200 and then every 7500 after that... what do you think?
Also, they rec using BMW Castrol TWS Motosport 10w60 synthetic vs the rec 5w30.. any thoughts? As I understood the 5w30 is better for winter months and a heavier oil like 10w60 is better for warmer seasons? I'm planning on changing the oil myself after reading this article.... im at 7800 miles without a change yet.... Would love your input |

15k is definitely too long. Do it every 7500. Since you're under warranty, you could use a BMW oil change kit to be on the safe side or just use BMWs filter and use your own oil. They shouldn't be able to tell the difference. I use either Mobil 1 0w40 or Valvoline 5w40. If you don't use those, make sure you use an LL-04 oil.

Are you sure it's LL04 oil and not LL01?

It should be LL-01, LL-04 is for the diesels. I have overheated it on the track with coolant temps, not oil temps.

Performed 15,000 mile oil changes and 7500 filter changes on my e46. 184,00 miles later, it is still purring. Currently will do 10,000 mile oil changes with 5,000 mile filter changes. Just to feel warm and fuzzy inside.

I recall when I had my WRX people saying the same thing about getting an oil change at 1200 miles to get all the shit out from the manufacturing process / after the break in period. Not entirely sure how accurate that is.

BMW used to do that for all cars, but once they started to pay for maintenance only the "M" cars get the early service.

More frequent oil changes may not help, but they won't hurt either (and are probably worth the extra $).
See attached pdf for the list of BMW approved engine oils.
