swapping TPMS
still have my stock wheels that have TPMS, but i am about to buy wheels that do not have TPMS. would it be worth it (cost wise) to swap my old TPMS to my new wheels or should i just order them with my new wheels?

Cheaper but not easyer.........they will come Balanced and ready to put on or u have to go and have someone put them in ...take them out and put them in.....probly will be a wash.........just buy the new ones and get your tires Balanced and ready to go.
Im assuming that u are getting rims and tires. If your just buying tires and putting them on your existing rims then its worth using your old ones. As the gentlemen told u before me. my 2 cent. that and a 100dollars will get u a good bottle of wine. |

you have to take into account the cost of taking off the tires on the stock wheels ($30), taking off the tires on the new wheels ($30), mounting and balancing the tires after putting the tires back on the new wheels ($40) and if you want to put the tires back on on the stock wheels....you can buy a used set of tpms at the cost of $120-$150.

Roughly $100-125 in labor/valve stems.

You may use your old TPMS but you will need to pay for unmounting the tires from your OEM wheels and having them installed in your new set of wheels/tires. If your new wheels already have tires on them, this will require unmounting your old tires, unmounting the new tires, installing TPMS, and remounting new tires, which certainly adds up in cost (as some have already implied). Are you buying your new wheels and tires together/already mounted? Do you plan on keeping your OEM wheels/tires mounted together or are those tires pretty much done?
TPMS is technically not required and you may use other valve stems with your wheels, but you will get a light on your dash showing low tire pressure. Some are able to ignore this, others can't stand it and prefer to run with the TPMS in their wheels. Hope that helps!

The cost is going to vary from shop to shop as everyone has a differeent hourly rate or flat rate. A good rough estimate would be anywhere from 150-250 depending on where you're going. Take into consideration that the average lifespan of a TPMS sensor is about five years before they malfunction as well. If your coming close to that time span it wouldn't be too bad of a investment to pick up a new set.

Like Alan mentioned, for dimounting and remounting 8 tires you'll be looking at roughly $150-250 total. Prices may vary based on the size/reputation of the shop. Depending on how old your current TPMS are, you may want to look into purchasing new TPMS from tirerack for $49 each (total of roughly $196).

You'll still need new valve stems wont you? Are local places likely to have that kind of metal valve stem, or are specific ones needed to be compatible?

If you are getting a premounted tire-wheel package, good shops around here charge about $25 to dismount, remount, and balance tires. Assuming you get a discount for just dismounting your old tires, you might be looking at $150, or more if no discount, to move the TPMS. What are you planning to do with the old ones? Again, if you are selling the wheels and tires as a package, might as well leave the TPMS and sell them too. |

I was at discount tire today to take the TPMS from my OEM wheels and put them on the new wheels that I've already had installed on the car. I was told that it would cost $75 to do all of that
