Should I extend the factory warranty or...

Hi all. I'm newbie about to buy my first 335i hopefully this weekend. The car dealership I am buying it from offers a 100k mile extended warranty. Should I go with that or extend the factory warranty to 100k/6yrs? If I choose to extend the factory warranty, how much will that cost and how would I go about doing that? The car is an 07 with 22k miles on it. Thanks for your replies in advance.

I would stick with the factory warranty, atleast you know your dealing directly with a authorized BMW dealership/parts.

I never understood why would anyone buy BMW's warranty. If you drive 25,000 miles a year (MAYBE) but if you don't then you are paying for insurance for 2 years and whatever miles you drive (ie 12,000 miles per year). The money you spend on the warranty can be put to the side and used IF anything major happens. If it doesn't then its all yours. I really don't see any major problems with our cars before 100,000 miles. Just my 2 cents.

Wait a minute, I just noticed you want to buy a used 335! That has major fuel pump problems!!!!!! Before even buying check into it. Maybe with this car you should buy the warranty!!!!!

I would definitely read the fine print on the extended. Make sure it covers most of the powertrain parts. I've seen a lot of customers get screwed when buying extended warranties.

Generally speaking warranty costs more than an average amount spent for repairs. This is how companies that sell warranty make money. I personally would invest some time to seek out small shops that specialize in BMWs and have them at least look at the car before you buy. If they give the green light and you like them you can use them for all future repairs outside of warranty and I bet you overall you'll spent less. Of course the extreme cases are when people loose their transmission and something else that is very costly in which case you will be glad you have it. It's a lot like gambling... your question is a lot like asking, should you go to a casino tonight and bet on red? The answer is maybe, but remember in the long run the house (a.k.a seller of warranty) always wins.

Good point. Which reminds me that before you buy a used vehicle, please ask for a warranty repair history so you can see if the vehicle is going to be a lemon or not.

It's not only the pump, which isn't even a problem, as all of the N54 cars are supposedly covered on that part for 10/120k now.

There are plenty of other problems with these cars. Injectors, turbos, coils, etc.... I'd imagine across the lineup, the warranty companies come out on top, but the 335 will not be so profitable in this department.

If you go third party warranty, make sure it covers fuel injectors, coil packs, Vanos solenoids, and low/high fuel pressure sensors. Those are the other heavy hitters. As yours is a 2007, check the service records to see if the turbos/wastegates have been replaced. Most wastegates were replaced under original OEM warranty. As mentioned, HPFP replacement is already covered by BMW and should be the least of your worries.

Extending warranty with a BMW-sold CPO-like offering is $2,500 to $3,000 to 6yr/100k.
