Unless this thing can also act as a po-po detector, I'll stick to my cable.

400 notes? Oh, BMW.

I think I'm just going to wait until the smoke clears on this one. The integration issues aren't resolve yet. I still see no need to buy an Iphone 5 or the BMW cradle. $ 1,000 later what do you have, loose ends.

My android phone and cable works for me, for now.

BMW makes it so friggin complicated to connect something as simple as a smartphone to their car. It wasn't until recently that you were able to connect an iPhone to the car without having to use an overpriced proprietary cable.

Much cheaper cars and much cheaper phones are able to connect to each other simply with a mini usb cable.

And this snap in adapter that realistically doesn't do anything more than a 2 dollar cable costs 399 euros?!
The iPhone has always used a proprietary cable. Prior to the iPhone 5 it was the 30-pin design that dates back to the original iPod released in 2001. That cable remained the same for 12 years, which is remarkable. When the 30-pin cable was developed, it could do things that USB simply could not.

Fast forward to today, and we have the lightning connector. Again, a superior design to mini USB. Quite honestly, from a hardware design perspective, every USB connector (A, B, mini, and micro) are the worst in the industry. Their designers focused on "cheap", not on quality. USB connectors are fiction-fit, omni-directional, and support shitty fit tolerances. Each one of these are compromises on the basis of cost, and hey, if you're alright with those compromises, then don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. Some of us prefer a quality product, even if it costs a little bit more.

As for the snap-in adapter, you don't have to buy it. You can plug your phone in with a standard lightning cable. I agree that the snap-in cradle is too expensive for what it is, but the best way to voice your opinion on the topic is to not buy it.

Except to date...we haven't seen a single advanced feature out of lightning. Even video output (not this cradle) has quality issues due to multiplexing

Love BMW cars but that is an absolutely outrageous price. It'd be cheaper to buy a second phone and leave it in the car!

I'm not arguing that the cradle makes sense at this price point. The lightning connector is about more than car connections. It may have little or no benefit in your car, other than the fact that it is much, much easier to connect quickly than any USB connector, and especially so when compared to micro USB. The connector is also far more durable than any USB connector available.

I'm gonna pile on just because it really annoys me when companies try to fleece their customers and think we don't notice. The f#%*%# dock should not cost as much as the phone. How hard is that to understand? Where's the value BMW? Stuff like this really hurts your brand image.

Yea but you can do this now with the USB cable that apple provides with the iphone for free.

One reason not to upgrade to the iPhone 5 for media playback. Yikes - the price to pay for early adopters.

We can get the cradle for roughly $280-300 USD in the states so it's not so bad. I might spring for it and give it a try.

But if it really can't do the video/ipod out, this cradle will be as effective as this DIY

Where did you see this price $280-300. Best price I can find is $351 shipped from Germany.

Does BMW think their customers are dumb? Seriously. Pisses me off. 399 euros when a $50 cable can get the job done

BMW is running out of credibility, have to agree! I called them to see if I could put an alarm on my 2013 328i and they said no, it had to be done now when built! Great, too cheap to wire it for alarms now???? Really?

I use my iphone 5 cable to plug in and listen to music, but I can not operate the steering wheel controls for the music on my iphone when plugged in, do you know why? Thanks!
