Polarized Glasses Radio Display Fix

Pics taken with Maui Jims placed in front of camera lens
Before

After
[/IMG]

Materials Needed: Piece of paper, ruler, razor blade, packaging tape (or something close to it), lens cleaner+towel, Lens listed below

1. http://www.3dlens.com/shop/polarizer-200x250mm.php
Title: Transmissive Polarizer 200 x 250mm
Price: $ 9.99

$9.99 but min $10 order... so i added:
Product No: #401B
Credit Card Magnifier Fresnel Lens
$0.69

Total of $15.xx shipped

2. Rotate it in front of your Radio Display until you can see through it
with your polarized glasses on. The radio display screen is exactly 6" and 1/8" inch by 5/8". I drew out the outline, taped it to my glass coffee table, then taped the lens down so nothing would move while cutting, now its not the thinest, so I also lined up a ruler with my cutting lines then taped it down so it didnt shift.

3. There is a very slightly sticky side and a smooth side. Prior to peeling off the protective layering on both sides of the lens, make sure everything fits. I cleaned the radio display with lens cleaner/microfiber towel. You wont be able to tell its on if you cut it just right. Installed in pic below

did you make sure to rotate the strip until you can see your display (with ur glasses on of course)? You cant just assume that where I rotated mine is going to be the same for the sheet you purchased.

Cool

I just installed this and it worked perfectly with both Ray-Ban and Arnette polarized glasses .

Thanks Dave!

I got the piece you sent me (thanks). Although it works in the orientation you provided it would work better if I could have been able to cut at a strip at 90 degrees to what you did. Before I cut the strip off the piece you sent me I placed it over the display until I found the best orientation, while tilting my head to the right, which was 90 degrees to what you did. Using your orientation, if I keep my head upright and my eyes horizontal all is OK. However, if I tilt my head slightly to the right the display goes darker. If I tilt my head slightly to the left the display does lighter. But when I tested with the piece at 90 degrees I could tilt my head to the right with no darkening. So, I'm thinking of ordering a sheet of my own so I can cut a piece at 90 degrees to what you did and so it will not go dark if I tilt my head to the right. I'll probably get the anti-glare variety to cut down on reflections.
Btw, my sunglasses are Ray-Ban Polarizeds (Aviators, IIRC). Before I installed the polarized film strip I had to tilt my head about 45 degrees to the right to be able to see the display.
Oh, one more thing, the material you got works much, much better than the overhead transparency film I tried before.

I just did this, and the lens I got wasn't sticky on either side, but I noticed that if you cut the piece of lens just a hair larger than the display, it will actually slide in between the screen and the black plastic, so you can't see the edges of the lens. It's kinda tricky to get it back out though, so don't cut it too big.

I wonder if it would be easier to get a better fit by removing the head unit and/or bezel...

Interesting, however can someone explain to me what I'm missing here? I can see my display day/night with no issues at all.

Your sunglasses are not polarized, thats why you dont have this issue

Wow, you guys think of everything! I'm going to have to try this since I hate having to tilt my head to the side to see what's playing.

Looks like the link changed since they have a 210x300 mm now:

DC516, do you have any leftover pieces? Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, mine was the same. It didn't have a side that would stick so I cut a second piece just slightly bigger than it needed to be (about 1/16" taller, but just as wide) and it fit in there so snuggly that I doubt it will ever come out, LOL.
