^^ thanks, Now I need to research to see if what the tech said about the tick being normal. There is no abnormal sound, like one louder than another, they all sound the same when it does tick. So maybe he is right?

I heard the tick in my car twice this winter. Now, how do I go to my SA and say there is a noise, I can't reproduce it, but please replace my heads...? Anyone had success doing this...

So I am guessing there is no newer one about replacing the head? Already had the lifters replaced to no avail. I am supposed to take mine back but not sure what they are going to do. Any help would be great.

I know I have to pull teeth to get them to even think about swapping the lifters so I doubt in my case they would do the whole head, and they heard the ticking 2x now.

Have you printed the SB for them and taken it to them? How can they dispute that if they have heard the noise twice?

Man I guess dealerships differ greatly with their thoughts on this issue. Mine replaced the lifters without even hearing the noise. They shouldn't be able to argue against the SB though!

Did the lifters work for you, because mine came back after a week. Waiting to hear what they are going to do next.

Cause they say it is normal for my model year (2006 325xi) engine and it it is caused by the valvetronic or Vanos that causes it and it is perfectly normal. I cant remember which one exactly but they mentioned both of those names.

Thats why I was trying to find out if that is true or not?

That repair was in November and I've heard the ticking twice since then so no it didn't work haha. I'm going back in feb 1st and I'm trying to figure out if I'm going to ask them to replace the cylinder head or not.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I had my head replaced about 3mos/600 miles ago and the ticking is back. My warranty expired at the end of 2009 too, so imagine my disappointment.

ticking not normal

ticking is a design flaw
hydraulic lifters should not make noise, indicates lack of contact with resulting wear
a brief history: 07 328xi, first told they can't duplicate, then it's normal, then they will bleed (thanks forum for SB), then lifters, more noise, new car
so now a 2008 328xi - lifter noise from the get go, "new, redesigned 2009" head to be sent from germany (we may have been a test case), may be making noise again, will have to check casting number on head, they may have tweaked it before going into full production and we may have gotten an earlier version
our use is the worst case for this problem, commute of 1 mile in the northeast
bmw may want to evaluate their exclusive use of castrol
but I will repeat, this is not normal, a majority of owners may choose to accept it, but that does not make it ok
thanks forum for the access to all this good info

2006 325xi had heard ticking sounds before but had this car over 4 years and the engine is still driving fine. I recently change to Mobil1 0w-40 and so far i haven't notice any ticking sound.
i think some of you are over reacting

very expensive way to pacify customers

while I agree that some people may be overreacting, I seriously doubt BMW would be doing all this warranty work or have given me a new car (a year newer) and then replaced the head on that new car if I were "overreacting". Or maybe BMW is "overreacting"

According to the SA, it's a 2 year warranty on any replaced part. He mentioned a mileage limit as well but it slips my mind.

Hey guy's,

I just purchased an 07 335i conv. in November with a little over 23000 mls on her. I am hearing the ticking noise, too at times. I also seem to hear it when the car is still cold. I have not noticed it after warm-up but will pay more attention now.

I too, would like to have my lifters replaced and will be sure to pay special attention to this issue.

Can someone tell be if their has been a service noticed place by BMW for this issue? Also, can you view service notices or recalls by BMW on this site or somewhere else?

Thanks. New to the forum and very first post!

Not Normal

Now they are telling me that it is normal. What do I do, go to BMW NA? How will I ever get resell value out of the car with this ticking? Help!!!

I had the exhaust lifters replaced. Dealership was very good and did it without any issues. However engine still ticks on cold start-up after short trips. Ticking is not as loud as before, stops sooner and idle stability is better but the lifter replacement did not resolve the issue. At 16k miles this should not be happening. Going back in along with a few other issues. Maybe I am being too critical, however I now think the only true fix is a head replacement.

Seems to be. I had my head replaced at 12,000 miles. I'm at 17,000 now and it has ticked zero times. Definitely a fix that needs to be enforced.
