Hardwire a Speed Camera Detector
Any ideas how this can be done?
I know the dealer could probably do it for me but I guess they will charge ££££ lots! Or could I go to an independant BMW garage? (Anyone know a good one in Hampshire?) Thanks

Plenty of 3rd party outfits can do this for you.. You don't need to go to bmw.
Though I'd just get a roadpilot micro go and make do with the cable.. Also, if that MP3 USB is powered, you could just get a long USB cable and run it from that.. |

I already have a 'Cyclops' detector, but I just want to hide the cable and not have it coming from the 12v supply - looks a bit messy.

I was tempted to do that when I first got my Road Angel, but 3 cars later, I'm glad I didn't. Depends how long you're planning to keep the car I suppose...
One other thing to bear in mind is that portable speed camera detectors and sat-navs are the most stolen item from cars. Ideally you want to leave the car parked with no visible trace of the detector/satnav. Thieves even look for the round "sucker" marks left on the windscreen, and will break inot the car on the off-chance that the device is still in the car (most people don't take them but leave in glove box or centre console). So a 12v power cord might be a bit of a give-away. I'd be interested to hear what others have done.

tailormades right, i bought a Road angel plus. You get also get a little pad that sits on your dash and holds the unit in place - so no need to use the bracket that leaves the sucker marks, for the scumbags to find! Its a little round disc thats magnetic to hold unit in place.
When you leave the car you just take it indoors and charge it up overnight SORTED |

Ive gone for the road angel plus, neat unit and also as a lot of people use them the database isnt too bad either.
I hate wires trailing, and this is nice and neat!

One of my all day test drive cars had a hardwired RoadAngel in it. The power cable popped up through one of the windscreen vents & the unit was attached to the vent as well. It looked very neat, no cables lying about.
I guess any place that installs stereos etc... can simply install a power cord. There's still the theft issue though, particulary as you cant remove it I looked at the these, but I think I'm just going to go for the navigation hack. I dont do many miles, and for most of the miles I do, I know where the cameras are & where the mobile cameras hide. All 10 points have come off my licence now as well so it's clean again!

1. I already own a CYCLOPS GPS Speed camera detector. 2. The navigation Disc only shows the locations, it does not warn you before you get to it. 3. The CYCLOPS database is alot more up to date than the information that you burn onto the disc.

On the subject of non-marking simple to remove systems for mounting sat-nav I use one of these for my Garmin Nuvi (doesn't fix the trailing cables though ):
It actually works brilliantly, it's got a soft underside that grips the dash without marking and stops it sliding around. The lumps on the side are little bean filled cushions to give it some weight. Proven during full ABS application to not budge at all It also allows you to mount the unit closer to you to make touch screen operation safer and removes as easily as just lifting it off the dash. Available at: http://www.globalpositioningsystems....scription.html To be honest, the Nuvi (with Cyclops camera database) has been so good it makes me wonder about ProNav in the next car. Fortunately I think I can convince myself I really need both

Looks good. Better than leaving sucker marks on the screen. Regards Chris

I sit it just to the left of the instrument binnacle so that the screen is nice and easy to reach. I tried to stick it to the right but as I've got a widescreen nuvi it won't fit.
I'll try and remember to take a couple of pics over the weekend.

I find that with it sited here I can reach the screen without having to stretch and I can also see completely over the top of it. Whereas when mounted on the windscreen you have to stretch to operate the touchscreen and it sticks up into your line of sight over the bonnet and is slightly distracting. Best of all it takes all of 2 seconds to fit and remove and doesn't leave any tell tale marks. I also changed the splash screen

....Whilst also potentially revealing to any passing criminals (due to its apparently permanant nature) that you may have a satnav locked in your glove box though !?
On this subject, my father in law is well chuffed with his Tom Tom but wants it on the dash of his Civic rather than on the windscreen - I can't find anything like that non marking thing that Matt posted about above but something like that for a Tom Tom one would be ideal - anyone aware of anything like it? Also, everyone seems to want to charge for speed camera databases for Tom Tom - anyone aware of a 'free' one?
