I found when I start with 1st or 2nd gear, I actually feel some vibration on my steering and gear nob (where my hands are).

hmmmm.... I will run it for a few more days and will see.....

I wonder if you could just seal the hole from the inside of the tube instead of cutting it. Same effect right? If we can find a plug that is almost the same diameter as the hole, we can just silicon glue it to the hole.

I cut my silencer off about 8 months ago and have had no problems whatsoever. See my post on page 2 for the perfect plug to use.

I wonder if anyone here knows what this thing is for?

Typically engine intakes have a certain resonance frequency. At this frequency you will lose power and gain noise. These little intake bags effectively remove that frequency so you don't have then power drop and don't have the resonant noise at that RPM.

I doubt you will notice the power loss - so it can't hurt - as long as your "fix" lasts the life of the car. If ANYTHING gets into the intake tract unfiltered in will likely wreak havoc with your engine. Using silicon glue and plugging from the inside sounds like the safest method to me. You guys that used epoxy and said everything has been fine for a year - well good luck. I hope your epoxy handles the vibration and heat of an engine compartment for 3+ years. If BMW sells a part like this without the extra air tank, that would be the way to go.

Good luck, and enjoy!

I found it in the aisle with screws, nuts, bolts and such. It was in those little drawers you can pull out. The great part about this hole plug is that it's locking, which means it basically snaps in. It could probably hold its own without any glue, but who wants to try that? I used trusty ole JB Weld to make it stay. The hole plug size is 1 - 3/16" I promise, this fits perfectly. Here are some pictures, and a rough pic of the little bag the hole plug came in.

I hope this helps some of you guys who are skeptical about doing this because of the 'plug fitment' issue.

just did this exact method in modding mine. worked like a charm! only difference was instead of using jb weld, i used super glue gel pretty liberally and it sealed perfect. thanks for taking all of the guess work out of finding a plug!

Dose SamCo make a hose with the proper bend and diameter to just replace the entire hose?

Got a Reply from Samco

"HI Adam,

We could manufacture this part if there was enough interest i.e. a group buy
of say 15 - 20 hoses, however we would need to be supplied a stock hose for
pricing / tooling before ant retail price could be quoted.

Looking at the photos in the link does the spout need to be hard plastic or
can it be silicone, what does it connect to and how?

Regards,

Mark."

So the question is instead of removing it can anyone get a tube to send to them to have a GB made?

What are you guys using to cut the silencer off. I have a dremel, or should I use a hacksaw instead?

'Using silicon glue and plugging from the inside sounds like the safest method to me'

And I would say exactly the opposite. If you plug from the inside - there is always the chance it may come loose and be sucked into the engine

Whereas if you plug from the outside - if the plug comes loose and falls out - well, your car will simply run like crap or not run at all (due to increased intake air downstream of MAF).

But at least you'll know what the problem is and EZ fix - but if it gets sucked into the engine, not so nice...

Don't really see what all this infatuation with more intake noise is all about anyway (which is all this mod may accomplish). Sounds more like a 'Hey, look at me' mod It's not like removing the silencer is gonna yield you anymore HP - which is all I would be concerned with.

If you want better intake flow, either in order of least to most expensive:
  1. Cut charcoal filter out of stock airbox & install aftermarket filter
  2. Swap airbox over to the Euro airbox with aftermarket filter
  3. Buy aftermarket intake
  4. Install BMW Performance Airbox & again, cut out charcoal filter
