If you had 4 in the Scirocco you probably would be limited to boot/hatch space but the extra height (Hatch) you would still have about as much as an E92 and although the Golf would have a bit more the Golf R loses a fair bit of depth due to 4WD

More good input thanks.
I suppose Im directly asking Oli why the reasons why you chose the Gold over a Scirocco & why Real Thing chose a Scirocco over a Golf - just interested in knowing what affected your decisions?

Haven't done a lot of research but think comparitively the Golf is more expensive. Can see why someone chooses a 5 door Golf over a Rocco but not really understand why a 3 door Golf would be chosen over the Rocco.

Like a prozzie
I like back end, especially on the R, it's so low and looked hunkered down to the gound. I'm now fearing the R might just be out of reach to make the exercise work out however I was given the frankly staggering suggestion to bust the budget by the wife the other day (I hadn't even suggested it) - she's obviously after something expensive for Crimbo again .

I think it comes down to exclusivity! There are way more golfs on the road than Sciroccos.
Another thing that swayed me was that the mk7 golf will make the mk6 look a bit dated whereas the scirocco has a little longer until the model is replaced! It just comes down to personal choice really! |

I had a Golf R last year as well but only kept it for a few week as I had to many Cars at that time: http://www.xtreme-uk.net/deals-done/detail.asp?ID=378 Love Matts Edition 30 when I bought that off him last year but with 300bhp though the front wheels it was a trouser changing experience every time you drove it on the limited lol. Reason I bought the Scirocco over the Golf originally was that I wanted electric drivers seat and that isn't an option on the Golf prefer the looks of the scirocco over the golf although The Golf R does look nice from the back with the Twin Exhaust. I think what we want from a Car changes with age whereas 10 years ago I would have been happy with a RWD car this time of year I now want something that will get me out in the Snow and quickly from A-B fairly safely so the Golf R would be my 1st choice at this time of year followed by Scirocco R |(Fairly fast straight out the Box whereas you would have to remap an Edition 35 to get the same performance)

A test drive looms (once cars have been moved!). I presume you all remember me saying that I absolutely love the DSG box

Roger, Roger....not sure I'm feeling your move here mate. Chris is right in that I did like his Scirocco and the R certainly looks sharp (amazingly for a car with such subtle difference, it's much nicer than a standard car) but not sure I'd get that instead of your 370Z?
Am I feeling it's a change for changes sake? If so, there's nothing wrong with that but I just think that you'd bore of it quickly so, is there anything more 'interesting' you could consider? Ah heck, what am I saying.....just buy the thing and when you tire of it in 4 months, buy something else. Simples I do rather like the new A Class AMG......mmm, now theres a thought |

Well, get this for fate, I wander down the VW Manchester (was seeing client round the corner by chance) literally to have a gander around the three used 2.0tdi Scirocco's they had there just for a general nosey, chat, and poke around.
Checked out a couple parked outside that I quickly spotted and wandered into the showroom (part of me was inquisitive on what deals were on new ones) and, fuck me, what was the first car that met me, that's right you guessed it, a brand new unregistered well specced white Scirocco R; it even had the very desireable sunroof. One of only seven unregistered ones in the UK presently. It had all the spec I would wish for but the only fly in the ointment was that is had DSG and I want a manual. Anyway, had a chat, explained my plan of action and that the one in their showroom was the perfect car (colour, spec, etc) bar the wrong gearbox. We chatted about this and that, he checked on their systems for availability (not a single new one with a manual box and no build slots so a minimum of 6 months wait - they only build 1,000 R's annually) so thought he might as well do me some figures on the DSG car they had. I said if the deal was right then I'd be foolish to not give the DSG car a chance. Whilst waiting for all the figures to be put together we took it out for a spin. Now, I am really starting to like this car, love the interior (yes, it's just a funked up standard VW interior, but as I've never owned any VW before it's fresh and different to me), the seats looks terrific, and the car just feels that bit special. Obviously very well screwed together and feels very solid. A very pleasing exhaust note too which surprised me a bit from a 2.0 4-pot. Visability it pretty shite (a major reason for people getting a 3 door Golf instead apparently) but I'm used to not seeing much in the Zed. Now, this car is fast, 0-60 dealt with in 6.0 seconds for the manual and a fraction quicker for the DSG equiped car. Not mental fast (ala M135i) but certainly damn quick. Couldn't push it too much as it only had 9 miles on the clock so the tyres were far from scrubbed-in so kepted lighting up the front tyres plus the roads on the edge of City Centre aren't the best. It certainly felt planted to the road, very solid, and confidence inspiring. Handled well (as far as I could tell from the brief test drive) but completely forgot to test the comfort/normal/sport settings - doh. The DSG box has really thrown me and I'm now unsure what I'd prefer. Yes, it was very competant at what it did, and I must admit I quite enjoyed it, but would I get bored?? I'm not too sure I would but it's a niggle in my mind. We arrived at a junction and I felt my left leg and arm wanting to slow me down using the engine/gears but supposed I'd get used to it. I didn't feel quite as detached as I thought I would but I pretty much only let myself use manual mode - the paddles moving round with the steering way was a bit shite as I kept having to think where they were - wouldn't solid ones be better - who knows??? So cat amoungst the pigeons there. The looks, I think the R looks the absolute bollocks, especially with the sunroof (almost gives it that M3 carbon roof feel) so wouldn't have a problem at all with having one sat on my drive. So, where does all this come unstuck, well quite simply the price. It's a low £30k car already and this car, with all it's spec, was in excess of £34k - now that is M135i money which is arguable the better car. But the Rocco R is something a bit different. They struggled with a trade-in on the Zed and came up with a figure (kind of guessed they pretty much told me) £2k under what I'd expect but they said they'd try to improve this with more time. £1k dealer contribution and a special low 3.3% flat rate of finance - can't remember what that equates to as APR but sounds quite low (would have to check). Anyway, the Rocco R weighted in at over £600p/m, eye-watering stuff. I said in no uncertain terms that'd have to try A LOT harder than that. I could get an M3 for that!!! They did seem quite keen to see what they could do but I'm not holding out much hope on this particular car which is a shame as it's stunning and I'd even take this one, being a DSG car, and see how it goes. I'm not getting excited about it though. Think I'll be on the hunt for a 10/60 plate used one soon enough at about £22-25k . Here's a couple of piccies...

Roger, I nearly said it in my last post.....you can get a good M3 for new Scirocco money and easily for £600p/m (damn, IIRC my last M3 was £750/month and that was brand new with just £2k in from me!).
I know where my money would go (indeed, it went there twice!) - the VW is a nice car mate but not on your nelly for £600p/m. |
