Strange Whirring Sound...not spooling.
Is anyone experiencing anything like this? It happens more often after startup driving but I'm beginning to hear it after the car is warmed up as well. It sounds like a tranny whirring perhaps but I can't be sure. It's definitely not the higher pitched turbo spooling sound more like a whirring that builds in volume on more throttle. Thanks!

I get that too (except not on throttle). I have no idea what it is, and I couldn't replicate the sound at the dealer. It's intermittent for me. I hope someone else can chime in and advise.

That would be bearing noise from your turbos. Not a great sign. How many miles on your car?

The consensus seems to be that it may be a damaged turbo while others are saying it sounds normal

Haven't taken it to the dealer yet because it is almost inaudible when I put the stock airbox in. Also, you can only hear it during cold starts / warmup. Not something you can easily replicate after a 10 mile drive to the dealership. Also, someone mentioned that the BMW technicians heard the noise as well but stated it as being normal? I will certainly bring it up the next time I take it in for service (along with a giant list of other issues like window/sunroof creaking, steering column noise, wastegate rattle, etc).

Its a sign of turbo failure.
Anyone who says that kind of noise is normal is insane. None of my turbo'd cars have EVER made that noise even with NO FILTER element, nor even the drag cars I have tuned. The only time I heard that noise on one of my cars is my Mazda, and it has a hard time building boost now. New turbo is here, just need to fab up a new manifold for MOAR BOOOOSTS! You have a 1.8T and what seems like a 2.0T... bet they never made that noise normally. Was/is your car modded with more boost? If so, thats the risk in running the turbo wayy outside of its compressor map. |

I've noticed that a lot of N54s have some whine to them when the oil/engine is cold. If it goes away once it's heated up, just keep an eye on it. I've seen bone stock N54s with 30k on them making some bearing noise. It's easy to get just about any auto to do it. Just stall it up a little and with the hood popped you can hear the extra noise quite well.

I tried getting a video recording of mine today, but the sound is so soft that the camera mic couldn't pick it up.
I did notice that the sound persisted even when the oil had warmed to operating temps, but at an even softer level. After a couple quick romps at max boost, the sound seemed to disappear completely. I'll definitely keep an ear open in case it gets worse over time.

I don't remember hearing the sound in yours, so it's prolly similar.
