I've done a search and found loads of info - surprised I'd not seen it before.

I'm tempted to just go for some cheap HiFi tweeters - and just fit these.

- Top-HiFI (65136964013) £44.26
- HiFi (65136964012) £25.89
- Individual (65137839500) £44.26

I'm assuming this will still produce a much better sound that the stock system for under £100 - lets call it a stage 1 upgrade.

Has anyone done just this? Seems like most posters have gone further and put in amps etc. (which will obviously improve things alot but will at least double my costs) but I'd like to know if my proposed "stage 1" will make a siginificant difference in itself - especially for treble.

I fitted the L7 Tweeters first. As has been said, it just plugs into a spare socket on the door speaker next to the socket which connects to the door speaker. As well as the surrounds you need a foam insert which has a cut-out for the tweeter. If you are handy with a craft knife you can make a cutout for the tweeter in the existing foam insert. There are pictures of these in a thread I did a few months ago.

Subsequently, I got the Alpine upgrade installed which of course includes the tweeters (but not the mirror triangle/surround or the foam inserts) so I wasted the money on a pair of tweeters - I have a new spare set available for half price if anyone wants them.

Upgrading the tweeters only does make a difference as some higher pitched sounds can now be heard for the first time and it improves the overall sound. It does not reduce the bass output.

With the Alpine upgrade, the bass doesn't improve a lot until you start increasing the volume and then it works very well - not a bass boom box but a nice fuller sound. I don't know about the THA amps but the Alpine upgrade has four channels - two for the front midrange and tweeters and two other channels dedicated to the subs under the seats. I have the bass setting on the head unit set at three.

I would be interested - are these L7 tweeters you have spare or the Alpine ones that came in the kit? Are they the same (and have the capacitor in the wire etc.) - what are the alpine ones worth?

I'm perplexed by the speaker in the E91 at the top of this thread that doesn't have the second socket - can you definately fit these to a stock set of mids? Are the stock speakers on a E92/3 different to a E90/1?

I have Sat Nav Pro but assume this just comes with stock speakers as I have no sound upgrade.

The 275 doesn't fit under the glovebox as not enough space, mine it stuck to the floor as high up as possible under the footwell carpet, doesn't show honest! Apparently there is more space on the drivers side but i've not checked this, (I think gizze has checked this out). You could get the longer pnp harness and route it to the rear of the car instead....probably a better bet i'd say, more time consuming but neater and more secure.

Actually it does fit under the glovebox if screwed into place/use adhesive pads. It won't fit under the lining though!

I hope someone can help me, I have been thinking about this for some time and appreciate there are many threads on this already – however most seem to deal with the e92.

Please accept my apologies for any repetition but I was hoping someone more computer literate (especially with realoem.com) could confirm that these are the only parts I would need for the tweeter upgrade. I have a 335d M sport e90 (feb 07) with Pro Nav & Bluetooth etc, but the base stereo system.

Is it all plug and play?

I seem to remember someone referring to sound insulation foam or similar – is this required as a separate part or is it included with the door surrounds?

I would appreciate anyone’s confirmation on the above. Again sorry for the simple nature of the question, however my BMW dealer cant seem to provide any help and wont allow me to return any incorrectly ordered parts.

Can't help you with the part numbers as I got it for the coupe but the description looks right. The foam insert is for inside the mirror triangle. It comes with a cut-out for the tweeter to sit in but you could just cut out the centre of the existing foam with a craft knife.

I would just add that my surrounds for the touring came with the foam insert in. I don't know if this was a mistake but it might be worth checking first - you may not need those inner triangles.

And yes, the mids have the socket under the metal tab and it's a great first upgrade.

I'm slowly getting the 555 amp in there and then the SWS. I don't get a lot of time so i'm doing it bit by bit slowly!

I would like to confirm things that other have said.
For a E90/91, the foam insert is provided when buying the cover window frame (left) 51337171201 or the cover window frame (right) 51337171202.
It did not read the thread in the forum so I did not know before buying. I now have 2 foam inserts.
For the Hifi tweeter 65136964012, although sites such as realoem show the set as being 2 speakers, there is only one per reference. I have only bought one. It ended to be more expensive than the price advertised on the web.

excuse my ignorance here, but if BMW are charging the best part of £80 for 2 tweeters, would it not be better to spend similar or slightly more on some component speakers that would include mid range speakers and the tweeters, from a choice of manufacturers. Would that not likely offer a better quality of sound and speaker than that offered by BMW for a similar price. If the door panel has to come off anyway to connect the tweeters, would it not be better to just replace the mids in the door as well while the panel is off?

What size are the mids in the doors 5.25" or smaller?

that sort of clarifies it! SInce I already have a 4ch Alpine amp in the garage, which will accept a speaker level input, along with all the necessary wiring, I would probably be as well just buying some component speakers for the front then as there's no point spending more cash than necessary.

I may even get brave and attempt the install myself as the only other thing I;ll need will be the door panels for the tweeter housing.

On realoem if you look at the Alpine retrofit kit,you will notice that the only parts that they say is needed to install the kit is the window frame cover.
I have also seen on other posts that the existing foam inserts are already shaped to fit the tweeters, so anybody knows what is the truth.Today I oderd my kit, but without those foam inserts so I'm a little bit worried.

As far as I know, the existing foam inserts behind the mirror triangle do not have a cut-out for the tweeter (applies to E92 and E93).

I think I have read that for E90 and E91, when you order the entire triangle/trim section, the foam inserts for tweeters come with it - but I'm not certain.

In either case, gIzzE just cut out space for the tweeters in the original foam inserts with a craft knife.

If you leave the foam inserts off, you stand a very good chance of getting wind noise.

Why are people so much worried about the foam insert? Just cut a thick piece of any foam and insert it behind the tweeter. It will hold the tweeter in place and even insulate the area from out side noise. Just pack it tightly.
