Speakerphone via Bluetooth unclear??

I was chatting with my friend over bluetooth today and noticed that when he was on his handset, the audio through my speakers was clear and I could understand him, but when he switched to bluetooth on his end, I couldn't hear anything (his voice became garbled and unclear).

I've been on the phone with him numerous times while he was on his bluetooth and never had any problems on my end (while using my handset). We tested it 2 different times with the same outcome.

Is it definitely a problem with his car or could it be something wrong with my bluetooth?

Note: we are both iphone 4 users. He is using Bluetooth in his 2010 4runner and I am using bluetooth in my 2008 335i w/iDrive.

check out the apple forums. there is a known issue with bluetooth and iPhone 4 connectivity. make sure both phones are updated to latest iOS.

Linked a search for 'bluetooth' in macforums.

It could be any number of things:
  • His car's bluetooth technology
  • His phone's signal
  • His phone's speaker
  • His car's microphone
  • Your ears
  • His speaking volume
  • Your reception (phone)
  • Your reception (bluetooth)
  • Competing ambient noise messing with the synchronous sound functionality on either of your phones
  • Your friend is jealous of your fine BMW and he's just fu*king with you

If it happens consistently with him and not at all with others, I guess I'd hazard it's at least related to him, but even then, it's pretty hard to say.

I have had occasions where I've have a successfully dialed (as per the phone) call that the other party can hear me I cannot hear them. In all those cases, either they or I redialed the call, and all was well with the world.

I wouldn't spend too much time trying to figure out what's the cause, unless of course I just had time to burn. If redialing the call resolves the issue, I'd get over it, as I described above.

Good luck.
