Ok guys did some more reading LOL. So check this out, this is what I am going to get done and I hope it sounds good if not oh well.

Keep in mind I have a E90. So I will replace my resonator delete with the magnaflow xpipe that was linked earlier in this thread. For the OEM mod I am going to remove 100% of the packing and wrap the perforated pipes in both mufflers with titanium heatwrap. JUST LIKE this guy did in his E90 M3.

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=869384

Thoughts?

I THINK that's a good idea. I would expect the titanium heatwrap to dampen some of the rasp that may occur with packing removed. I'm looking forward to hearing the results.

If you are gonna wrap it with heatwrap, please do not remove the packing, you will get a very hollow sound which is gonna create noise, not a nice tone. You can hear it from a few pages ago. The packing material is there to absorb sound and also assist the transfer of the wave from the exhaust pipe to the muffler housing. I had read a few muffler design patent which they specifically mentioned that packing material is critical in the transfer of sound wave.

I would leave at least 50% packing. It has that tin can sound without packing.

If I remember Tomz_M3 removed the packing (all of it) and replaced the pipes with non perforated pipes and his car sounded pretty nice.

Do you mean a honda civic tin sound? I am trying to avoid that sound at all costs, so 50% of the packing and wrap the pipes? Is wrapping the pipe and replacing with the straight pipe going to generate the same sound?

Confused again.

If you don't mind the welds looking like they were done by a 4-year old with a tube of JB Weld, then have any shop do it. From experience, most exhaust shops in my area aren't very good welding stainless steel or don't even want to touch it. Maybe things have changed in recent years.

OEM stainless steel is also a lower grade than the 304 SS that is in high-end aftermarket stuff. That might make it easier to weld, but I'm not sure. Properly welding stainless requires TIG welding as far as I know.

Remove all packing? Cover passenger side perforation? This thread is all over the place and I am no exhaust expert
I'll let you know tomorrow. I'm having my "is" mufflers welded in. My car is an E90 with catless downpipes, but stock secondary cats and E90 resonator. I'm thinking it will be perfect for a DD.

Iphone? I just really want to hear what they sound like with catless downpipes and the e90 resonator still in. Even a phone video revving the car a bit at a stop, then maybe put the phone somewhere and do a quick 1-3 pull driving away would be perfect and i'd really appreciate it. I just want to make sure I 100% want to try this before I invest money in having it all welded with new tips and whatnot

You could trust speculation or someone who actually soaked the PE !

I'm still a bit behind on my project, but I'm confident to duplicate the PE tone. I'll post up video once I got a hold of a reputable welder in town.

I actually think you're in luck. I'm going to pick up a GoPro this week, so I can get some actual clips while moving. I'll take a cold-start video and some revs, too.

That would be awesome. Thanks!

The tip change the tone, basically it's a 16 gauge 80 mm 304 stainless steel pipe.

I'm using it to replace the last 6 inch of the exhaust.

I'm not sure how much packing is in the PE, but it's definitely there !

Did you wind up getting it done? If so how's it sound?

^ Majority of the people here are looking to increase the noise level, but your looking to reduce the noise level?

Guess the easiest way for you to do is, swap your Performance exhaust with someone who has the stock non-performance exhaust.

So you have a Performance Exhaust. Do you have any cats on the car?
