I just picked up my BMW 335 I last week and it hasn't had an oil change since 44k and I got the car at 62k. Will this oil be my best bet?

Also for my AT tranny fluid should
I use royal purple synchromax, royal purple max ATF. I also going castrol transmax.

Oooohh I didn't know Castrol Syntec had a 0w-40 with BMW LL01. That is definitely a good choice. I would want to get that too because in the summer, I burn a lot of oil and my theory is that my 0W-30 thins too much after a long hot drive.

For ATF, it is a bit tricky. BMW does not recommend using aftermarket oil, and recommend using the ZF oil, Shell M-1375.4, which you can get at a Land Rover dealer. You need to research the corresponding part number. This is what I did 20k miles ago.

So bmw recommends using land rover transmission fluid for their cars? Lol

The dealer was telling me to use their dealer bmw oil which is 5w30. I wonder why they advise that over 0w40?

That is known as german castrol or GC. It is great oil. It is what I run. Watch for sales on castrol and you can get a pretty good deal on it.

Is the GC 0w40 better than the 5w30 BMW oil?

Land Rover, BMW and a bunch of other manufacturers use ZF transmissions in their cars.

ZF *only* recommends their LifeGuard tranny oil in their transmissions. All the OEMs buy their fluid from ZF and put it in their OEM branded bottles.

One of the best places to get oil, pan, filters etc for ZF transmissions is www.thectsc.com. Alot of times you can get a complete kit from them for alot less than a dealer for BMW OEM parts outlet (like Tischer).

I believe the 335i uses the 6HP21 (6HP19TU) transmission.

Actually that's the 0w30.

This 0w40 came out about 6-9 months ago IIRC. I think it may have replaced their 5w40 which was LL98, but I'm not 100 percent certain.

Any LL01 oil will be fine for your car although you may experience some consumption initially when you switch grades.

Whichever is cheaper. In the end they should perform essentially the same. Now if you expect very cold cold starts then I would opt for a 0w-X.

either one would be fine for your engine. It is highly recommended, though not required (still a debatable topic), to use oil approved by BMW's LL-01 long life standards. Another excellent alternative is Mobil 1 0w40 (also LL-01) which has been used on BMW's by many enthusiasts for years with no problem.

from my local market, walmart has the BEST price on the Mobil 1 0w40. prices are really significantly lower when compared to other retailers like autozone.

Castrol 0w-30 and 0w-40 are fine and they have both at Autozone.

I live in NJ. Probably in the 20's sometimes in the winter. But not that cold.

Im probably going to go with mobil 1 0w40 and a Mann oil filter.

Side note, is this a good spark plug to get for the 335i N55?

This is what I used. Also a Mann filter with new seals and crush washer. Oil came out black!!! Smelled like gasoline. The guy before me went 20k without a oil change the dumb bastard.

Wallmart has the m1 0w40 for $25 à gallon. That is an unbeatable deal.

You should use exclusively BMW atf fluid.

If it smelled like gas you may want to pull your plugs and look at them/ smell them to see if you have a leaking injector.

So if I pull them out after the car cools down would be best?

Where can I get a spark plug socket for my car locally? Do parts places have it?

Do all Autozones now stock up the new Castrol Syntec 0W40? If so, I'm going to hoard as much as I can. Hopefully it can alleviate my oil consumption issue.
