how important is oil change after break-in?
so i'm done w/ the 1st 2000kms...but figured that an oil change now is not covered...is it that important to do it to remove all the impurities caused by parts wearing out?

It's never wrong to do it and it's worth the price. However, the engine will not break if you don't do it. In my personal opinion, it is important. You find the answer in your question already.

I asked the head of the service department at my local bay area dealer this same question. He said given the properties of modern synthetic engine oils, and the manufacturing processes and tolerances for modern engines, an oil change after the break-in period is 100% unnecessary. Of course it can't hurt....

I was going to do this but my car has only 1500 miles and it is due for an annual oil change in Sep. I figured changing the oil now and again in Sep would be a waste.

I changed mine at 6000 miles and was really dark. After that it ran so much smoother...so, I say change it. Especially if you did a hard break in like I did

I changed my oil at 1,200 miles. The SA asked why so soon, she just didn't understand. The oil was super dirty. I'm at 6,000 miles now and already itching to change it again even though I'm trying to hold until 7,500 (half of the recommended 15k).
Drives a lot smoother as well, like stated. |

I hear this all the time... and when i went in for my 1200 mile oil change it went like this. S-What are you in for. M-oil change S-oh , did the car tell you it needed it ? M-no S-uh, its not needed M-I want to get the wear metals out of the oil S-ok so you want the oil changed M-yes please S-so just the oil or do you want the filter changed too ? M-UH, yes filter too.... (grumbles to myself) S- not a problem car will be ready in 1 hr. M- thanks anyways I paid for a blackstone test and sent the oil out yesterday. I suspect it will mimic the other blackstone test floating on here. .... High wear metals (normal for a new engine) to summarize... I feel the shops are hypnotized to tell the customers 15k oil changes nothing else is required. the oil in our cars is quasi synthetic and it WONT LAST 15k... filters tend to last 7k ... however the BMW filters i was unable to find a test on. Please think about it, the engine is new it WILL HAVE wear metals in it, some wont be caught by the filter. I dont want metal particles floating in my oil for 15k. gl ppp

Changing the break in oil out of the car is not gonna hurt it, but you're probably wasting your money. Of course, all M cars get a 1200 mile service where all the fluids are changed, so who knows.

There was an article in Bimmer magazine a couple of months back that recommended changing the oil before the 15K mark. That's good enough for me. Changed mine at 3K and put in Mobil One 0W-40.

i changed mine recently. and it really is a night and day differnce as far as smoothness of the ride is. i would highly recommend oil change before the 15k mark.

The long service intervals have a commercial background only. In Switzerland and Germany ( and some other countries as well ) the service is free of charge for the first 3 years or 100.000 km, whatever comes first. Longer service intervals are cheaper for BMW, that's the whole story.
