drop in filiter vs intake?
hey guys ive read this other thread about dci and saw that they are completely useless as a matter of fact they take power away after one or two pulls so what about the drop in filter?

Drop in filters are a good choice if it is time to replace the intake. They won't make a night and day difference but are worth it over the OEM if it needs replacement.

i bought the dci as I love the look but haven't installed it due to the heatsoak issues, plus I also like being a sleeper. Why is dci critical at >360hp? Does the greater airflow really offset the heatsoak loss at that point?

Its obvious that the engine shouldn't suck air from the hot engine bay. Find other solutions. Period.

It's just a replacement air filter for the stock airbox. Therefore, you're still drawing in cold air from the front. Supposedly the aftermarket ones are more free-flowing, but don't expect any real significant gains in power. Having a clean filter is probably the more important factor if you're going to keep the stock airbox.

John, don't waste your money. Go for a good dropin filter (BMS/K&N whatever your fancy); get a good intercooler and stay with it...my DCIs and Single cone intakes are white elephants in my garage museum...!
And if you worried about power...put on your DCIs and i will race you with my drop-ins... and you can see the filters hop down the road

I am willing to bet at boost above 13 psi that your drop-in will not keep up to the STETT CAI. I don't want to get heavily involved in the debate, but the CAI does not suffer from soak as my testing has shown.
There is a reason that every single one of the highest hp N54s are not on the stock box. |

I reverted back to the dropin after my own extensive dyno testing on different days on different maps, boosting 15psi on the bms gauge with the BMS dual cones and the K&N dropin. My car performed consistently better with the dropin filter. The only thing i miss about the dual cones is the sound.

Its 7pm my end and time to put my son through his reading lessons and prepare clothes and stuff for school tomorrow. sort out the dog etc. hectic stuff.
I also thought the gruppe design is what i would consider but then bmw brought out a "perfomance" airbox for the 330 and i thought maybe there is one in the pipe line for the 335...so still un deciding
