I saw their advert on a BMW mag a while back and spoke to them. What they went through made perfect sense. I'm not affiliated with them, but dealing with the spate of BMW thefts that I personally know about in east London it's a no brainer for someone that lives in a city/high crime rate area. |

I'm having my OBD port modified by them later this week.
The problem remains that BMWs are now known to be easy to steal so even with the problem sorted for a particular car, it doesn't stop someone chucking a brick through the window only to realise they can't hack the OBD and program a blank key, leaving you with your car still there but a busted window. |

But how long till they suss the mod and know how bypass it? That could be a problem when a 'sneaky' mod becomes widespread. Especially with stickers.
Unless its very clever that is, but I wouldn't think its a software thing, more likely a wiring mod or similar, hoping to fool the thief and take too much time. That's why Tracker don't give stickers for your car (they didn't when I enquired a few years ago), else the thieves know its got one and set about removing it from the usual locations they're fitted. |

Agree doughboy. For every security measure there is going to be a bypass somewhere down the line.
Best thing for any Beemer right now is a DECENT tracker, from the company Tracker. |

You don't have to make it impossible to steal, you just need to make it more difficult than other BMWs to steal. |

I used to be a alarm developer/installer and always predicted that one day this would happen, BMW are the only ones who can stop this buy redesigning the encryption but that will then envolve recalling every car with push button start which i can never see happening
I will be looking at my car later, maybe look at is moving the obd port so its not so easy to acess. |

The best OBD safety mod is something unique that you do yourself, no one will have come across it then.
EG, take the drivers kick panel off, trace back one of the Can bus wires from the OBD port (find pin out on here), cut it and extend the 2 ends to a tiny little switch and hide that say, in the passenger footwell under the glovebox somewhere (or wherever you like thats not easy to find) Just means you need to flick the hidden switch to enable the CAN bus to the ODB, no big deal, a few pence in parts. Best switch would be a latching pushbutton, so you can feel whether its IN or OUT without having to see it. You would rarely need to switch it on, so you could hide it pretty well in the mass of wiring behind the glovebox. |

A ready made, automatic operating, wireless key programmer that works in 10 seconds! Genius!
It must contain software etc to find the right ECU areas and read the data etc, great product. Maybe BMW should buy some, why do they claim they need to take 1/2 an hour or more to program a key for you! |

My thoughts exactly, the best security mods are always better when done by individuals as everyone does things differently.
When I worked for Tracker we used to have to find 5 installation places per car however when we showed them to BMW technicians they always used the same bloody position so my point is for any security modification to work there has to be a variation of installation method otherwise its pointless, this is a little different as there will be so many BMWs that wont be modified though. |
