I agree and would greatly prefer RWD. But my E90 is a daily driver and for this climate, xDrive is just plain handy.

every week or so, someone will post xdrive or not. All the RWD guys will say xdrive isn't needed and all the AWD guys will say you'll burn in a flaming pile of wreckage if the surface isn't perfectly flat, smooth, and as dry as the desert.

The majority of cars are fwd. I don't see the mass mayhem on the side of the road that some would have you believe. Yes AWD puts power down nicely. Yes it's nice to have those other 2 wheels moving(when one isn't slipping as it has 2 OPEN diffs).

Not many people live out in the wild wilderness(especially BMW drivers) where no one plows a road. Chances are also that if someone looked outside and saw something like that, they wouldn't be driving anyways.

I do not need awd where I live and work.

Damn, I'm paying $600/month for a forgery. This sucks. O'well, at least when I'm driving around the RWD A$$hat in the middle of the road installing chains, I can laugh at the thought of what is "real".

Tires, tires, tires.

I can barely get out of my pool-table flat, snow-covered driveway with my stock tires. With snow tires, I have yet to get stuck in 6 years of driving my RWD Bimmers. Blizzards. Mountain passes. Ice. Rain. 12+ ski days per year.

But... buy what you want.

(just don't claim you "need" AWD unless you live at the end of some steep, 12% grade road. )

"Sierra Mountains" gives you a free pass.

Anywhere that measures snowfall in FEET rather than inches means AWD is a must (unless you got some 4WD backup vehicle).

No, NEVER! A x-drive bmw sedan (suv is another story) is not a true bmw. it doesnt feel like one (acceleration), it doesnt handle like one(much worse suspension IMO), and the fact that it sits really high makes it look very ugly. The Xi suspension is neither comfortable or sporty..its harsh for no reason..IMO.

It's pretty simple for in the snow, AWD + Snows > RWD + Snows > AWD with All season > RWD with All season.

The choice then just becomes how much snow go power do you need? For most people RWD + snows is plenty, and lugging around the extra weight is a waste. But if you don't want to deal with snow tires, then AWD is better. As for handling, and performance, none of us are good enough drivers for the height or launching differences to really matter. If you trying to get one or the other for better performance, a driving course would do far more to improve your performance than either.

Personaly I like the look and feel of the RWD cars better.

apparantly some think that in order to be a true BMW you have to have inadequate traction and an inferior drivetrain! Ah... the ultimate driving machine... complete with suprise oversteer that is attacked by a flickering dsc light, unexpected fishtailing, the good ole try to start in the rain at a stop light and get tire chatter that makes your car feel like a camaro... and in the snow... well there I suppose it's just the ultimate parking machine

that guy noro posts in every thread about xdrive... loves to incite crap by saying that it's not a real BMW.

He, like others, are just jealous... they know 4 wheels providing traction is simply better than 2.

xDrive + KW V1s + snow tires makes me look forward to driving in the snow.
If I wasn't living in the north east, of course I wouldn't get xDrive.
It gives a great safety advantage as well as piece of mind for 5 months of the year.

Finally someone who answered the key question: "RWD + snow tires" is better than "AWD + all-season tires". Kudos to "you" and to "Jaguar36"! If you are on a budget (and who isn't if you're driving the ultimate driving, and ergo expensive, machine) snow tires and rims cost only $1,500 CAD whereas x-drive costs $2,500 CAD (albeit arguably say ~50% less if the car is leased depending on residual %). Definitely an advantage of x-drive is ability to avoid hassle of changing from all-season to winter tires each season, albeit not for reduced safety (that RWD + snow tires gives). Hence, doesn't make sense to get x-drive except in harsh winter climates (unlike here in Toronto).

For stopping and turning only. If you are going up a hill, the AWD with AS will still have the advantage. If the RWD has an LSD it would help, but gaining traction at the two ends of the car will always get it moving faster and make going up hills easier even when equipped with AS. Now going downhill, turning and braking the tires do more than the drivetrain.

agreed. for traction from a stop... or even just trying to accelerate, awd with all seasons trumps rwd with snows. This has been demonstrated in tests, but is easily evidenced in a quick drive. A rwd car with snows still can get stuck easier than an awd car with a/s tires.

RWD = sports car handling
AWD = practical, all-season use
FWD = wrong wheel drive
