Yeah it sucks. But you can work out a deal with the seller to sell you the car at wholesale price which is probably 10% cheaper than the final price you worked out with the seller. Then you can pay that 10% difference under the table and save the tax on that 10%...

That's called tax evasion, but yes many people do this lol.

Just make sure whatever you do that the price sold "as is" from seller isn't too ridiculously low as what blue/black book says or you'll pay tax on that amount anyways.

Or just have an Albertan buy the car for you, register it in Alberta, then sell it back to you. Assuming you couldn't find a car you want in Alberta. I had to go to Victoria to get my car, everyone in ALberta wanted a few extra grand, for cars with a lot more KM's.

You'll have to pay the taxes if you buy it from the Albertan in order to register the car in BC.

When I bought my 335 in BC, I moved to SK for a year, I had registered my 335i in SK,I went thru the inspection but I didn't pay any tax. Vise versa, I moved back to BC and register it here in BC, I didn't pay tax either. I paid tax already in BC when I bought it but..... still
so BC is different?

They always find a way to fuck you do they? I searched prior and couldn't seem to find anything that specifically says you have to pay taxes. Here is the link for ICBC, and they give a pretty vague detail on the matter.

I bought my past 2 bmw's through private sale. I paid full tax on both while registering the car at an ICBC insurance office. About 12%...

Good thing about private sale is you can declare it at a lower value - however proceed at your own risk.

Regardless of how cheap the seller says he sold it to you, at the MTO they have the values for the vehicles and they rate them as:

Low - Mid - Highest Value of vehicle according to the year/mileage they really don't care about condition of the vehicle or equipment since they don't take the time to leave their desks and see it.

So technically you can show up with a bill of sale for $1000 for 2012 car but when you register it they will look at the book value and based how much you are paying from that. They've changed that about 5-8 years ago because of how many people where showing up with a bill of sale of a brand new car for $1000 and paying only $115 for taxes. You have to be careful because if you say that you bough it at a super low price, they can send a letter to the seller asking them to confirm the sale price of the vehicle. And if he or she say different of what you told them they will come after you for the difference...

Good luck
