You should be okay using that DIY.

I can't see what difference it makes whether it's manual or auto - unless I'm missing something!
The manual gear selector looks like there is more work involved as you have to unclip the Leather gaitor from the centre console, which in turn looks like it just slots over the idrive control knob.

Does anything have to be done for the switch behind the knob?

Also assume there will be some electrical type plugs to remove under the surround/gator?

Garage List
put the car in drive position as if you leave it in park its awkward to lift console out and its easier to remove shift knob

Having done this now on my e90 pre lci, I can add my 2 pence worth if anyone else needs to do this.

1. As said by other posters, the auto knob just comes straight off without too much force
2. The gator comes up by squeezing from the base
3. The auto plastic surround comes up by gripping it on the inside. Be careful as there are two electrical connectors under it. I could remove blue one, but not the other so left the plastic bit hanging loose. That will slide through the console trim hole
You also need to disconnect the connector for the cigarette lighter. Chunky white plug
4. The console trim comes up by lifting from the points where the sponge parts are. I used a screw driver for some subtle leverage
5. You work the trim round and it will come up, then pull towards the back to free it from under the dash
6. The idrive controller has four screws holding it on the trim. Un screw, and the centre console trim will be free.

Hope this helps.
