Different tread pattern safe?

my rear tires are getting pretty worn out, i want to switch to a diffrent brand/tread pattern of tires. the same wont change anytime soon. so my question is having different(front/rear) tread pattern safe or harmful? also is there anything wrong with have 2 diffrent rear tires(same size of course)?

I don't think you should have a problem . As far as being a different size, I assume you mean different from the front tire size. Many of us run a staggered set up . In fact they come from the factory staggered.

As far as different brand tires with different tread, that is not a problem either as long as fronts and rears are the same. Back in the 60s and 70s, it was common practice to replace only the rear tires with snow tires for the winter. Also, on my E36 M3, when the rear Michelin Pilot sports wore out, I replaced them with Pirelli A/s tires . Kept the Michelins on front .No problem.

Unfortunately, Im going to disagree here. You should always run the same type of tires front and rear.

Handling, braking and mpg will suffer. Putting A/S tires in the rear of the M3 while keeping the grippy summers up front will lengthen stopping distances. It will lessen traction and more than likely make the car more tailhappy and less correctable. Because of the different compounds, they will wear unequally also.

oh is that so? i am trying to run falken fk452 in the front and vredestein utrac in the rear, ill think ill call a wheel shop to see what they have to say.

I am running my old Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 on the front and my new (POS)Advan S-4's on the back and it is a little tail happy but breaking is the same and no other issues.

The reason I put the Pirellis on the rear and left the Michelins on the front was BECASE OF uneven wear! The rears wore out in 8K miles and the fronts were still 1/2 tread. Did not drag race the car either. BTW, put same Pirelli A/s tires on the front when they wore out.

Thanks, but I grew up before front wheel drive was available in any car in the US. Cause of wear was obviously due to the fact that all cars will wear out the drive wheel tires faster than the non drive wheels. BUT on the M3, the Michelin Pilot Sports were an extremely soft tire compound better used on the track than on the street. Plus due to the stagger of the M3, they could not be rotated.
