E91 is not a 007 submarine!! Flood damage!
While driving to work along a country road this morning in the dark; drove in to some flood water. I didn't see it until I was in it!! Engine stopped and wouldn't start again!!
I did have a good workout pushing the car out of the flood by myself! Crumbs they're heavy!! AA man arrived about 4 hours later! First thing he said was "you'll need a new engine!" and then he said some insurers might even write it off! The water didn't get in to the cabin! Car eventually recovered to local BMW dealer who will let me know the bad news, but they think it is highly likely the engine is damaged!! Part of me wishes they do write it off!! Shall I buy an Evoque? As always I'm learning lessons the hard way!! Anybody had anything similar? |

Sorry to hear this? Was this just a dip in the road that had flooded or did you go through a Ford?
How much of the front did you submerge and did you have a bow wave going across the bonnet? If water made it to the engine then it's highly likely that you'll have bent pistons etc. Unfortunately water doesn't compress well. The intake is fairly high up so it would have to be quite deep for this to happen. If you are lucky you only flooded the exhaust causing the engine not to run. Based on your description that the interior is okay, then it doesn't sound that deep. Did you crawl out of the boot or were you able to get out without letting any water in? |

I suspect a hydraulic'd engine would be pretty obvious to see/hear..
If the car just stalled and died you are probably ok.

If you got in deep enough water to reach the air intake, then chances are you hydrolocked the engine => new engine/car
When you tried to restart the engine, did it crank? If not, then it might be hydrolocked.

Not good. Hope everything goes ok for you.
Had to avoid some pretty huge puddles myself this morning. |

I drove through a ford once and the engine ingested water and suffered hydraulic lock,
The AA man took a glow plug one at a time and turned it over an the water squirted out. Did all 4 cylinders and the 1.7 diesel engine was fine.

Nice, but boot too small to make it a practical car for us. We stuck with another Freelander (our 5th).

Here's an update re my E91! Well the estimate for repairs is already at £11.5k!!!! New engine £7k, plus turbo plus intercooler plus exhaust..... Looks likely the car will be written off! I hope! Got told by Direct Line anywhere between 60-80% of car's market value!!

60-80?! Why so low? Or is that what they'll write off at rather than what they'll give you?

we had a van written off at work by doing the same thing, only female driver we had, and picture ended up in the Guardian, not good PR for us nor female drivers.

Still waiting to hear whether the car has been written off! When I said about 60-80%, I meant that the write off value is between 60-80% of the car's market value!! Found out that the BMW dealer had 11 cars with the same issue over the last two days!

No mine is grey. I went there yesterday too. Just as I arrived another 10 plate grey 318i E91 arrived on the back of a recovery vehicle flooded too! That's at least 12 Beemers I'm aware of at Bridgwater with flood damage!

Depending on the damage they would get 20-40% of the value from a breaker or repair company who would put it back on the road or break it for spares. Hence it is cost neutral for them to write it off and likely to be less hassle - since there's no comeback if the repairs cause problems later on. |
