Guys ... please don't encourage Rolex. it's such a greasy brand, heh. I am a huge watch fan, and owning a Rolex is rarely respected by any true watch aficionado (same as Panerai, FWIW). For the same money, you can get some pretty awesome brands that will really raise some eyebrows and show you as a knowledgeable collector, rather than someone who just throws money on the problem.

Look at Glashutte, Ulysse Nardin, Blancpain, Jaeger, Jaquet Droz (look up the automata that Droz used to make - tell me that this is not awesome). Look on the Timezone forums if you want some independent watchmaker ideas. Maurice Lacroix makes some beautiful watches, too. Consider that a Daytona, at $15K, can get you an Ulysse Nardin Maximariner *and* a Maurice Lacroix - double the fun
