Well based on the fact that the IS only came out a few months ago, and only looking at the 7500 number (bmw sedans) vs. the 3800 number (IS), that isn't much of an advantage.

i always wanted to see what those figures would be. There really are a lot of 3 series out there, these are specifically for e90s right? Bottom line is the growth in sales is nice for BMW.
Doesnt the timing of the is350 being available skew this tho? I agree with Socom, that rise in demand is huge too. DC has already got is250s and 350s poppin up left and right.

7,500 : 3,882 = 1.93 : 1 BMW are selling almost TWICE as much 3er E90 sedans as Lexus ISes. And I think that is a huge advantage. If you compare IS' 1st full month sales (Nov 2005), and 3er E90 Sedan's 1st full month sales (June 2005), you'll see the interesting difference: 3er: 6,486 IS: 4,447 The ratio is 1.46 : 1 And then take the IS in its 4th full month (Feb 2006), and 3er E90 sedan in its 4th full month (Sept 2005): 3er: 6,523 IS: 3,882 The ratio is 1.68 : 1 In fact the ratio between 3er sedan sold and IS sold is increasing, not decreasing. Meaning IS is not catching the 3er sedan, but the opposite: the 3er sedan is increasing the advantage over IS. IS' importance as a threat to a 3er sedan is just overrated. |

I'm sure it will take some time for the boom to hit.
It probably takes about 6 months before a car starts to take off. It has to be out long enough for enought people to see it enough times to want it, and goto the dealership and buy it...

Is this really a surprise for you guys? 3 Series do dominate in its class.
What a real business man would focus on is, how much increase in sales for the IS350 in first month of introduction compared to IS300 in its first month of release. It increased by 250% some percent. Considering how well the new generation IS is doing compared to older generation IS, I would consider that as a threat(somewhat). They can't just take over the segment in one generation that BMW has been the top dog for so many generations. Though we'll have to wait and see if huge sales increase in Lexus IS line-up will continue in the future, for now, its impressive enough and Im sure Lexus is more than happy about it. Then again, seeing how BMW sales were increasing in its 4th month(6486 -> 6523 versus 4447 -> 3882), it seems like the IS' interest is falling, and maybe after all the impressions about the new IS, people decided to go with E90 instead. Its just a question of whether competitions' a"mount of threat" is "increasing or decreasing". Notice I never say there is a definite threat. Because there isn't yet. GregA, do you happen to have first month sales of 1999 BMW(first year E46)?

330i sales are still a bit weak. 1500 is an improvement over the measely 900 sold last month (and that's not a surprise - probably an anomalous month, post X-mas), but is still considerably weaker than 2000+/month that BMW was moving during the summer. I guess we'll have to see if this trend continues.
The Lexus IS has been selling very well compared to its predecessor. Give it some time. |

Winter months mean sloooowwwww sales for just about every auto-manufacturer, so these data tell us very little as they are not the most important time of the year to consider.

There's no doubt 3 series is still the top dog in this segment, but Japan car makers are catching up pretty fast. G35, TL already took away quite a few potential BMW buyers, now comes the IS. Looking at the numbers, I have to say IS is doing pretty well.
Anyway, it's good to have competition. Without G35/IS350, we probably need to wait another 100 years until BMW put bi-turbo on the I6, and another 1000 years to have the powerseat/leather standard ... Quote:
