$45K plus $5K doesn't equal a new 2008 M3 (est. $65K). It doesn't even equal a new 2006 M3, but it would beat the crap out of it. There are definite reasons to mod a 335i if you don't want to plunk down 65 large.

How many-if any-M owners actually add aftermarket stuff to their cars? It seem to me that once you buy an M; you just leave it as is. Touching a hair could throw the tuned up machine out of whack!
I think that a better "personalization" option would be to buy a "close to M" car then mix and match at will. HOWEVER, DO NOT PUT AN ///M BADGE ON IT!!!!!!!Whatever gets into you!

I would be willing to pay for 20 horses...IMO, the V8 M3 may not be an every day car, particularly when you constantly are on grid locked roads! Our 335s may be "smoother" for this type of driving...the ///M badges are tempting though, I must admit!
1. You didnt read my post to start out with. I was talking about modding 335's to meet M performance. Not modding M's.

2. M3forum.com probably has members in the thousands that have modded their M3's. I modded mine!

For someone like me the contrast is even greater. If you ED, you are well under 40k for a 335. If we can get these options done at the factory -- like a M-sport pack -- then the cost will be reasonable. I would estimate an E90 335 w/ M-sport package, LSD, and power flash upgrade to still be under 40k on ED at 1k over invoice. That is as close to a 4-door Porsche as I expect to get, given that the M will not be available on ED bargains. So it is more like a $20k difference, assuming that you can get a M3 for 60k.

I think that factory OEM performance options will be a huge advantage in the car mag comparo tests. R&T and C&D will be running amped 335s against the G37, S4, IS-F and co.

1-I know that you were speaking of modding 335s...
This is just my opinion: an M car is considered "exotic" that has been tuned by BMW's M division...the price you are paying include that division's involvement...it's like getting that collectible and painting it...when you temper with the car...

No matter how much you mod a car, it will NEVER be a ///M!
"...modding 335's to meet M performance..." you say...BUY a ///M.

We actually do not have conflicting opinions here...we just have different philosophies...

not for everybody, the guys just throwing a procede in obvisouly get the better deal, but a lot of the time in heavy modding you end up sepdning more than buying a comaprable car stock

yes, but you missed a crucial point, which is that even after all that modding the car still wont be as fast as the M3.. where as the m3 STARTS with all the crap you just modded into your 335

you also cannot compare base prices since the M cars dont come with many option and are pretty much fully loaded from the factory

alot of people who bought 335s got a car with a 50k retail (thats how much the retail on mine was atleast) for about another 5k i could have gotten an M if the price pans out the way its looking

m3 is looking to be much cheaper than 65k

you also have to keep in mind that with all the mods to the 335 the m3 will still be faster, worthy im sure of, if, any extra net purchase price compared to how much it would cost to turn the 335 into it

that given, yea sure a procede or a flash would be worth the money compared to just getting an M performance:$ wise

but once you start going into "cams, shortshifter, exhaust, dif ECT" from BMW your performance:$ ratio is going to drop like a log

As an everyday car with occasional spirited driving the e92 is a better car IMO. The M3 will not have the combination of a low rev / high torque engine, great street handling manners and the awesome gas mileage of the 335i. Adding a reflash and maybe a few other performance goodies will be icing on the cake.

I understand what you are saying but your numbers are wrong. I did ED on a 335i Sedan at 1100 over invoice and it was about 42K with premium, nav PDC and shades so the car you are describing would be closer to 45-46K than under 40 but still there is a significant differential compared to an e9x M3.

greetings again rad, i believe we were on the same boat, kassel, anxiously waiting for our redelivery... how's the car been treating you? anyhow i guess it all depends on what options you got to see if one crossed over the 40k barrier... as for my "stripper" car all i added was the zsp and mine was well below 40k (w/o tax and bs fees of course) price being ED + 1k... but you're right in the sense of all those mods stressdoc talked about and still be under the 40k barrier would be tough...

btw rad.... KASSEL PRIDE!

I heard from another source that the mods will be brakes / suspension / bodykits / wheels but no engine mods....

If the new M3 is under $60K I would be astonished. The technology in that V8 justifies the price. If it is under $60K... I'll be first on the waiting list. Knowing that it won't be... I'll keep my 335i because it's not stretching my bank account.
