A question on DIY oil change on the 335d
When changing the oil filter on the D, it comes with a black gasket.
However, I find that if I replace the gasket, and then torque the filter housing to the spec on the cap, the gasket pops out. Am I missing something here? |

Don't have a photo but since I did mine this weekend it is fresh in my mind. The groove you are looking for is basically all the way at the top of the threads. It should pop right in there. Remember to lube it with some oil on your fingertip.

And the o-ring should be snug in the groove. I could see it sliding up and out under pressure if it were stretched a bit and was not snug in the groove.

The o-ring should seat in a groove located near the top of the oil filter cap. Looking at this image, it would be just under the lip where the horizontal line is touching the cap near number "4".

what filter are you using? I bought some weird name brand off of NAPA and the O-ring was defective. make sure they are in right groove. or try using your older O-ring to see if that'll help.

Interestingly enough, the smaller two o-rings don't need to be replaced and don't even come in with the oil filter from BMW - just the big one needs replacement. The mechanic at the dealer said the bottom two are not stressed or even "necessary" - ordering them would be separate and not usually in stock. Strange.

I know exactly what you're doing wrong, because I did that too at one point.
You did mont take the old o-ring out and placed the new one all the way down (close to the lip of the filter housing. When you tighten the plastic housing the o-ring pops out being pushed by the receiving end (engine) edge. If you locate the old o-ring, you will realize where the new one should go. It's not all the way to the lip, but maybe a quarter to half an inch from the base where the threads are. |

Every day is a school day no matter how old or smart you are. That's why we aircraft mechanics always check each others work even if it is something that we have done hundreds of times. Glad you got it worked out.

The oil filter I ordered came with all 3 o-rings. The bottom and middle o-rings were swollen compared to the new ones.
I do notice that the OEM filter only has the large top o-ring. |

Aftermarket Oil Filter I purchased the 5-pack OEM filter as well. It's a cheaper deal then ordering the 10-pack. The 5-pack will last me a year. I will change the filter about 1/2 way thru the life of the oil. |
