Normal Oil Consumption??
Hi guys
I am new to this board. My mom just purchased a Titanium Silver 328i sedan a few months ago from Park Shore Motors. Tonight I borrowed the keys and went for a drive. After about 5 minutes, the low oil warning light came on. I thought this was crazy considering the car only has 4600 kms on it. The oil level was showing at minimum and saying to add 1 litre. So I pulled over, and added 1 litre of oil (thanks to the dealer for supplying us with a bottle as part of the tool kit). Now the oil level reads at maximum. Should I be concerned about this? I will call the dealer tomorrow but would like to know if anyone else has the same issues. This is our first BMW and I find it pretty crazy that it is saying "low oil" after only 4600 kms. Thanks |

yea, no worries....its a known fact that the new e9x engines burn quite a bit of oil during break in...i added my first around 5000km, changed the oil at 7000km and every 7000km or so after that

even though it's saying it's at the minimum and to add 1L of oil- it's just bmw being extremely precautious. the car still has PLENTY of oil left - something about huge sumps in the cars and that if the warning light comes on, you're pretty much fine; just throw in an extra litre of oil is all.

Ok great guys, thanks for clarifying.
I discovered that the oil indicator really only shows you the last litre of oil. So if it says 'minimum' that means you're only down 1 litre, not there is only 1 litre left. So it's not as bad as I first thought I guess. |

Yup, my 328xi is low at around 5000 km.
Go to the dealer and they should theoretically top up the oil in your car for free.

I had the same problem, but mine has 14K miles already. Scared the shit outta me. Once I added a qt. of Royal Purple full synthetic, the electro gauge took awhile to recalibrate... then viola. The reading was now near the max.

This is perfectly normal. My 530Xi showed low oil at somethng like 12,000km. We pulled it into the closest BMW dealer rightaway and they just topped it up free of charge and sent us on our way. No waiting. Didn't ask any question, not even our names. They said this happens all the time and don't be surprise if this happens again. Last month (28,000km) it showed low in coolant and we did the same thing. Again, topped up free of charge by a dealer. No waiting and no question asked.
