N52 Owners: Elec Water Pump Check-In

Trying to gauge n52 owners' experience with the oem electric water pump, so let's put up a poll! If you have less than 60,000 miles please do not participate as nobody expects the factory pump to go out before then. If you replaced as part of preventive maintenance, please choose options 1-5, the number of miles logged prior to performing the replacement. Do not choose option 6.

If you did replace your water pump, please also provide the following info:

a. at how many miles?
b. how much did the repair cost (and indicate labor vs parts)?
c. was it replaced at indy or dealer?
d. was there any other damage caused as a result?
e. do you track your vehicle? (DO NOT reply if you participate in canyon carving, street racing, etc.)
f. auto or manual?

I've also compiled a list of DIY's...

hey for those who've replaced their pumps. is the fan noise significantly louder while in the cabin before failure? or is it just when you are outside the car?

You should get close to double your miles before really having to worry.

Just keep doing preventative maintenance (coolant flush every 30k miles or 2 years) regardless of voltage. Should extend its life. Forgot who it was, but he had 150k on his original water pump / thermostat doing preventative maintenance.

I'm on my third pump. Had mine replaced under warranty with only 5000mi and just had it replaced again at 178,000 mi. I have a hookup at a dealership and it cost me about $600. I do track my car and I believe the second one failed because of multiple dry runs. There is air getting in the cooling lines but only on the track or VERY high loads (full throttle-high rpm for extended stints). The latest pump revision is good and shouldn't fail. Running air through it is about the worst thing you can do to it.

Any idea when latest revision was released?

a. 62k miles/ 100k km
b. 1300 CDN incl. lab and parts and taxes (not sure about the split)
c. Indy
d. None
e. No
Additional Info: Automatic Transmission

The night before it failed, I did drive it hard before I went home. When I parked the car and turned it off, the fan was still running at max. It failed on the highway at cruising speeds: orange -> red temp lights in a matter of seconds.

Sorry, one thing I should've also added, for those who did have to replace, is your car auto or manual? Not that it matters but the more color the better.

Replaced at about 200000km with a 6mt. Part was under 500 and I changed it myself along with the thermostat while I was there just in case. I drive aggressive and no track. 06 325i and no damage caused.

Most of the 120k guys are 325/330s or early 328s which had the very first version of the pump. I think they're up to revision 3 or 4.

Water pumps are same but obviously 2 entirely different motors so different variables at work, let's keep this to n52 only.

So you're saying the earlier versions lasted longer?
