different idrive knobs?

why do i see some cars with menu and voice command buttons and some only have the menu button like this:

Wow, never seen those. I've only seen the ones that have six (or is it five?) buttons above. These an older style?

Those are original idrive controllers. They were upgraded in 2009.

I've got the single button one. It twists all the way around freely.

i have the 2 button one but what makes some have 2 and some have 1. has anyone ever really noticed

Pre LCI. All depends on the model. Those are much older iDrive knobs

Yes, pre lci, you can have both. In 2009 they changed to the multi button i drives, but before this your car can either have one button or two buttons. My 2008 has one button.

I saw an 07 or an 08 sedan with two buttons after peeking in a car the other day, I only have one. Does anybody know the exact answer?

Pre 03/07 = Two Button Haptic Feedback, menu/voice split. If 2007 model, should have rubber, earliest e90 iDrive CCC did not have rubber.
03/07 and Beyond = One menu button; no haptic feedback.

Also for 03/07 builds was the introduction of the 6 touch sensitive buttons..

No, my May 07 335i E92 has the one button controller but does have voice command. Only access button for that is on the steering wheel.

I want to swap this out for the multi-button controller. will an 09 controller and center console trim piece do the trick? I've heard stories that it's plug n play. I've had the HPFP recall work which includes system reprogramming...

^^^ this is in my build as in my sig... mine has two buttons AND rubber ring (not pictured)

Me and a friend have exactly the same spec'd 335i coupes. Mine is and 07, his is an 08. I have two button, he has one button. There are a few minor changes to controls such as radio, the # of buttons on idrive, etc, that occurred between 07 and 08 MY vehicles.
