They did tell me though, that since this is not a TSB or recall, that if I have any problems related to the update of the DME that I would be liable for any cost to diagnose or fix. They did tell me that they dont foresee any problems but that was just wanted me to know that. They made it seem that if there was some wierd bug, for example, compatilibility issues with something in the car. I would have to pay to have it resolved.

So, that got me thinking, having the luck that I do. Is there a chance to have any possible issues after an update? I mean with anything, electronics, programming, etc..?

Any thoughts?
So the cost to update the DME would be $0, but any associated costs if it goes wrong are your responsibility?

I'd be down with that. How do they rationalize the DME update? Customer request?

For me, it's for my JB tune. I have the Stage 1 and I can't upgrade to the Stage 2 on an older DME.

No. The cost to update the DME, for me at my dealership, is about 210 bucks!

Any associated problems that occur and costs that result from the DME update would be my responsibility. Not sure how they would rationalize it Jdub.

My main question, for more experienced individuals than myself or any BMW techs that are online here, would be possibility of any problems arising from the DME update. I am looking for some feedback before I think about doing the update.

In my line of work, it makes the most sense to me that there are not going to be any update revisions to the DME that would only properly operate on certain production date cars. I would think that BMW would want to take the risk out any dealership updating a car wtih the wrong revision number and what not. Any of the revision DME should be compatible on the appropriate model cars. I just want to be sure.

thanks in advance for any feedback or opinions.

I know it's been said before, but I still think it's pretty bazaar that BMW would go through the trouble of researching and creating an updated DME firmware/software that improves the vehicle in multiple ways, and then not offer it to customers, let alone REQURE it upon the next service visit. Why even bother making it?

In short its about $$ I would assume.

Its not a safety issue and not a recall so there is no reason to update every single car when there is new software. Its just not feasible for a manufacturer, it would cost them tons of money to re-program every car, every time they change software which is frequently. Not only that, a huge inconvenience for the customer.

Imagine going into the dealer for a routine maintenance oil change. Instead of "Sir, it will be approx 30-60mins while you wait to get your oil change and you will be on your way" It would be "Sir, we have to update your DME again (for no reason at all), its going to be 5hrs, so here is a loaner car and come back tomorrow to pick it up (if nothing crashes and we dont have to replace modules and wait a week to get the new part)"

The DME updates are for affected vehicles that have specific problems when they arise. Kind of goes along the lines "if it aint broke, dont fix it"

Wonder how a DME update would affect a Dinan tune- I assume BMW would be all on board to reflash? This I gotta ask my Dinan rep about over at Prestige in Ramsey NJ.
