My dream project

Hello guys,

I have a project that i would like to share some thoughts with. Its just a dream, and i know it would be very difficult.

My dream is to order a E93 without navi or idrive, but with biggest sound package, and radio pro.

Then order the NAVI/Idrive instrument panel, switch the one that comes with the car. Install a touch screen of some sort where the navi usually is. Install a carputor behind it (computer in a car) with Windows Vista. It should have WiFi so i can transfer my music when the car is in the garage. It should have bluetooth card so i can connect my phone to it. And ofcourse some flashy navigation system.

Now to the hard part. Anyone know if i need to switch the entire instrument panel, or just the top part? Is it possible to connect yourself to BMWs speakers? Is it possible to buy BMWs mic and install it in a computer?

There are lots of questions, you dont need to know, thoughts are really appricated!

If you have any thoughts of what could be very hard, or what could be easy i'm really eger to hear!

Best regards,

Chris

Get iDrive so you can integrate it. You don't want to lose that functionality. (Use the screen for both iDrive and the carputer with an AV switch)

There are no inputs avail however with the aftermarket NavtoTV2Go module, you have plenty of I/O to play with.
I have one and it rocks

I thought about a carputer but decided it wasn't ideal. I was going to get a Mac mini and use Clearwire service but it was more hassle than it was worth for me

Odds are you can slurp the touchscreen activity off the CAN bus. I've heard of touchscreen+A/V adapters for other cars' OEM nav screen (eg Prius), but I can't find any links at the moment.

You could also stick a second touchscreen overlay on the OE screen to connect to your new toys. It'd reduce your brightness a little, but probably not enough to make a big difference.

I would go with the touch screen overlay. There are interfaces out there that will allow you to connect a resitive touch screen to the USB port of your car-puter and it reports touches as x,y locations with mouse click.

I would steer clear of capacative touch screens as they are subject to noise, however resitive touch screens are subject to heat problems causing calibration to drift. If you get a good quality touch I/F then the auto calibration should be taken care of.

Well I was thinking ripping out the stock screen and replacing with a similarly sized touchscreen unit. And using a TvNav2Go whatever-it's-called to play with the input from the actual iDrvie electronics to your new screen.

It seems to me that it wouldn't necessarily be ergonomically comfortable to use a touch screen in the OEM position on the dash...
