Post Question On Home Blue Prints

lets say you are interested on a guys house and want to build something like it. can you ask the owner of the house to sell you the blueprint so one can make revisions and make a house based on the blue print?

i don't have any plans on robbing the man but can't seem to describe it any other way. hope you guys understand. thanks.

If the house was built recently, the local building department will probably have plans on microfilm.

And if they don't ask the guy's for the general contractor info and the general will probably have an architect contact.

I would think that the right to that blueprint belongs to the architect. You prolly need to track him/her down and buy the rights to use the plans.

The architect holds the rights to the blueprint. I've seen some pretty nasty law suits go through in favor of the architect when homes are copied and they aren't compensated. The building dept. should have a record of the GC and the architect if the house is less than 30 yrs old. It may be archived, so it could take some time. I doubt the owner has a buildable set of prints.

you need to find the architect, even if the owner of the house has a copy of the plans for some odd reason and you make another house off of that, the architect can sue you.. if you ask the architect/ company for the building plans, they would most likely want some $$$
