Diesel leaking...
Hi all
I have noticed that when I fill my tank to the top and park it up, I'll find a small puddle of diesel on the floor roughly under where the fuel filler cap is... If I don't totally fill it (I just leave about 5 litres) then it's ok... Any ideas? Urfan

I had the same on mine, and I think it's a quite well documented fault. Had to take it back to the dealers for the filler neck to be replaced under warranty. (Split filler neck) been fine since. I det there are loads of drivers who just don't notice this problem but actually have it. If I had not had to pull over at the filling station after brimming the tank, I would not have seen the leaked fuel and therefore, not looked under the car when I got home to see where it was coming from... Not filling your tank is not a solution, as the split will also allow moisture etc into the tank and contaminate your fuel system.

Your right it's not a solution lol. I just havnt got round to getting quotes and finding a place to get it repaired. I'm out of warranty so don't want to take it to dealers.
Rough idea of how big and expensive a job it is? Urfan

The filler neck isn't that expensive, but BMW say they have to drop the tank to replace, it's not going to be a cheap job.- not sure if you could manage without if you were to attempt yourself. I'd try contacting an independent specialist to see what they advise.

My local Indy did mine in an hour. He just loosened and dropped one side of the tank. I went to another Indy and he didn't know what he was doing a quoted me over £480. My guy £120 Inc the parts.

There are a lot of posts on this - some indicating that BMW will offer "goodwill" on this fault, and others - such as the one below - indicating that there are cheaper alternative solutions....

does anyone know the part number of this breather pipe as I have a invoice of work carried out on my car before I bought it and it's leaking diesel now....! BMW might cover it under warranty but just need to check if it was done

Don't know but mine was sorted out as a goodwill gesture a couple of years ago (or under warranty; can't remember). The dealers will know all about it though so shouldn't have a problem with them (doesn't help you cross-referencing though).

The reason I ask is before I bought my car the previous owners filled with unleaded and took it to BMW who charged 5k to replace the entiee fuel system, the invoice is 3 pages long so I presume it would have been done at the time but just want to check ...

Yeah I have the same problem, I have been avoiding getting this done due to costs. I havent event got a quote to have it repaired.
I have only been putting in 3/4 of a tank which seems ok but I didnt realise that there could be damage because of this (As above poster .. Moisture getting into engine). Let me know how much you get quoted please. |
