Dead Battery

Hey, my battery died and I am going to be buying a new battery. If I install an OEM battery does my car need to be reprogrammed? I called a relative of mine with a BMW shop and he says that it does not need to be but from I have read on here it does.

Are you seriously going to pay to ship an 80 pound battery across country from Tischer in Maryland? Get one local.

I haven't yet replaced my battery at 120K miles, but it gets well exercised with a 800 mile commute every week. I did however get a BT scan tool so I could reset the computer once my battery does bite the dust. According to the Bentley repair manual and the BMW battery replacement procedure from the TIS, reprogramming the car for a new battery is required. I'm sure if you don't the battery will last a reasonable amount of time, but to get the optimal life from the battery, it would be best to get the car reprogrammed. However, if the dealer is going to charge you $150 to perform the reset, then it is probably not worth it.

yes the new battery does need to be registered in the car to get the best life out of the battery. that being said-at my work it works out to be similar in price to have a battery installed as it would to just register the battery as we charge less per hour to replace and register a battery than we do our normal hourly rate...
