Guys, will RAINBOW DL-C4.2 4" (2 way comps) be any good SQ wise and also fitment wise in the E92's? I'm looking into these but haven't seen them on this forum anywhere. I understand that Rainbow 210.25 NG are fairly popular but again what is the verdict between the two variants here?

^^^ interesting! It looks like they even have a distributor here in the US. I don't have a category yet for 3-way systems, but perhaps I'll start one.

This thread is a great resource. I am in the process of putting my system together for my 128i. So far I have everything on order except under seat woofers.

What I am installing
Amp - Kenwood XR-5S amp 4x80 + 1x350
Front doors - CDT CL-4SL/TW-25 set
Rear deck - CDT CL-41/TW-22 set

I have used CDT speakers a few times in the past and have always loved the sound, and they have great tech support. Now comes the hard part...under seat. I don't want a sub in the trunk if at all possible. I listed to a lot of hard rock/metal so I don't need a boat load of sub bass, but I like a good bit of punch in the kick drums, and bass guitar. CDT is actually recommending their QES-680

http://cdtaudio.com/sep_components/s...ers/qes680.htm

These will handle the power, the smaller size would be no problem since I will be making a mounting ring to gain the clearance. I have also been looking at Morel MW266 or H8.1, or Hertz ES F20.5, but I don't think the Hertz would be great in there, and being a dedicated sub would be lacking in mid bass. I have 0 experience with Morel, but the 8 ohms doesn't bother me because I will be running them in parallel for 4 ohms a pair.

I have reached the point where I am going cross eyed from reading up about all these different options, so now I am looking for some info from the people on here who have direct experience with these cars. What are your thoughts??

I know this is the 3 series forum, and I am looking for info on a 1 series, but I think it is the same under seat enclosure.

I might opt for an SWS solution if not going for a Sub.

I'm not familiar with the CDT options, so I cant comment there.

Jehnert and Kicker are good MIDbass woofers for these cars. As well as the Morel, which I understand is harder to fit (ask Kaigoss).

Edit: doesnt look that CDT woofer would fit ANYwhere in a factory location...it was recommended? :

LOL and CDT actually has a BMW specific 3-way set, with shallow woofers: http://www.amazon.com/CDT-Audio-HD-6.../dp/B002Z0RWAO

I don't know if it would fit in a 3 series due to (from what I understand) a bit less clearance under the seat. I would basically have to make a spacer for most options so to go smaller I would just have to make that spacer an adapter ring. It was recommended by CDT due to it performing reasonably well in a lot of different enclosures, it has decent excursion, and it can handle the power from my amp. That and at $200 a pair it is a pretty attractive price point.

Also that BMW set is 1", 3", 6.5" not exactly ideal. But they do have a lot of 3 way crossover options. My plan is to run the component sets down to probably 120-150Hz depending on how they perform in the car, and these little subs from 50-150Hz again adjusted by ear to tune them.

I have CDT speakers in my wife's car, and I have really enjoyed them, so that is why I am going CDT for this system as well. Plus the 6 1/2" woofers in the doors of my wife's car put out a good amount of bass, so I figure that a 6.8" sub woofer should be a bit better. I will also have the option of getting 3 way crossovers in the future and adding a sub in the trunk if I find that these don't handle the bass as good as I am hoping.

The point is those woofers don't fit.

Is the 3" mounting depth too much? I haven't pulled the stock subs out yet to check to see what I can get for clearance.

I am just starting work on my 128 since I got it last weekend, and found out that the previous owner blew two of the stock mids so he had them disconnected so I wouldn't know when I was test driving it, so that is why I am upgrading the stereo so soon. I am trying to get as much info as I can from people with experience with these cars, but I am on a bit of a budget since I just got the car, and my old car hasen't sold yet.

I have been looking at a lot of options, but it looks like everything is a compromise, and with car audio you can't hear it until it is in your car it is a bit difficult to pick a driver for a difficult space like this. I am also looking at a pair of Kenwood KFC-XW800F 8" shallow mount sube with a 2 3/4" depth, or Hertz ES F20.5 also with a 2 3/4" mounting depth. Those are both for sale locally around the same price as the CDTs, but I am not sure how good those would work, and I haven't found anyone with experience with those speakers either.

I know you trust the CDT but Kaigoss list includes very good speakers.

If you want a 3 way solution, go Jehnert or the AudioSystems/GladenOne kit...

If you can afford a bit more money, talk to VP Electricity.

There is NO point in trying to make something fit, that doesnt fit well to begin with, there are plenty of better options.

Hi, wondering if DLS R4 could be used as a center channel speaker on an E90, is there space to fit the speaker + tweeter ? Are there any mounting depth limitations for the center channel ? asking as I am getting a decent deal on the R4's, I know the DLS 424's are the better option but can't get it easily in the UK, thanks for the help guys

Yes i believe the mid will fit. You can put the tweeter in the air vent next to the midrange, BUT the external crossover does not fit there, so you would have to run wiring through the dash and put the crossover next to the fuse panel or anywhere else you can fit it. Sounds like like a PITA.

Thanks kaigoss, appreciate it, currently have an L7 center, was advised that a tweeter was a must in a center channel speaker, was looking for some coaxials and came across the DLS, I am sure it is better SQ wise than the Focal IC100 (which I think I unfortunately will now have to buy) but I'd rather avoid the installation headaches I have morel Hybrid ovations as front door speakers, will the focals be a good match as centers ? cannot afford the morel xo's unfortunately

Also do I need to use the crossovers, I am amping the center through an Audison LRX 6.9 which has built in crossovers?

thanks Taibanl, checked ebay, not on there

Thanks for the reference to Matrix Audio, spoke to Dave who is great, he doesn't stock 4" speakers as the demand for them is low apparently, he was going to call DLS to find out if he could get me a single speaker, which is great, cheers mate

I think you guys have convinced me to not use that CDT set. I am still leaning towards trying something different, any thoughts on...

Hertz ES F20.5 (edit I have just found a local shop with experience with these cars, and they tried these, and they don't work)

He did recommend Helix E8W (not available anywhere in Canada)

Another local shop recommended the Kenwood KFC-XW800F, and is clearing them out...$150 for the pair if they don't sound great I will sell them, but I also taked to a rep from Kenwood, and they will play pretty nice up to 180 Hz, only downside to them is that they are not very efficient. I will report back in a couple of weeks once I get everything in.

With advice from Technic, and MusicarNW. I think I am just going to give in, and put a sub in the trunk.

I am going to try something a bit different for the fronts...CDT components, and a CDT SUBX-120 which is a passive 120 Hz crossover low end will be going to the stock 8" the rest to the components, this will all get a HPF at about 50-60 Hz. I might have to change out the stock 8" to a different midbass driver if it doesn't sound right with the CDTs. But from what I have heard the stock 8" should do pretty good down to about 60 Hz with a better amp driving it.

I will bite the bullet, and put a sub in the trunk instead of trying to get a boat load of bass from the under seat speakers.

Well, considering the fact that they don't seem to have any 4" midranges in their product line, I would say no!
