My spacesaver solution

Hi guys, had my BMW spacesaver finally balanced and ready to take on any flats my non runflats that I switched over to a while ago throw at me. Got the kit from getBMWParts.com. Is originally a 5 series wheel but they have tried and sold it successfully for the 3 series in the US and assembled all the parts required for the 3 series including the jack with it. Asked Tempe tyres to retry it on for fit too so that I have no surprises when I need it and they said is good to go. Also got some BMW felts for protection and a BMW storage compartment net to finish it off for a cleaner look. Pictures attached, enjoy.

looks neat. only issue it doesn't really save space?? there's a wheel (albeit small) occupying your boot!

Looks good man. Good solution to stupid RFT's. It doesn't take up that much room anyways. I'm gonna invest in a net to hold mine down too.

how often does anyone actually get a flat tyre?

I've driven maybe 200,000km over last few years, all sorts of roads in all sorts of (crappy) cars. I've driven over nails, part of a pram (around a blind corner on highway), planks of wood, potholes ++++, all at 110-120km/hr

Never had an issue with a flat tyre, just had a couple of tyres repaired (mainly after nails).

I'm thinking I'll just risk it and get towed if my non run flat tyre explodes

I've had 2 flats within 40,000km driving my mum's car. And I don't even drive it that often. Ridiculous.

touchwood or you might have one soon, frankly speaking had a puncture just once on this car and that was on a damn runflat. I think it's just a peace of mind thing even if I may never use it, wouldn't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with wife and baby in tow. Plus I woudn't want to limp on a flat with 19"s on lest I crack/damage them.

Im with purifyer here, flat tyre's aren't really that common (touch wood) so Im fine with all my boot space, non rfts and my NRMA membership if something happens.
That said, I've had slow leaks and nails in my tyres, but I've limped to fill it up with air then driven to get the tyre plugged/repaired for $15.

On longer journeys (eg: track day to marulan) I'll chuck a stockie in the boot.

Jeff RFTs are more prone to punctures for some reason...

Nice kit. It can save a lot of inconvenience if you do seriously bust a tyre, and I would say a very smart choice if going on an extended trip with the family.

If you don't mind me asking, how much was the whole kit?

I have the same BMW space saver with tyre, never used. Bought it from BMW Sydney and the 1 time I needed to use it it would not fit (only suitable for 325, 320 etc).

If anyone wants to make an offer it's just sitting in my garage.

I wont be selling the jack etc as that's still useful, just the wheel and tyre.

WOPALX, did think about the issue you were having, was yours a 5 series space saver that fits on the 3 series like this one or the one that was meant for the 3 series? What's you part number? My understanding is there are 2 diferent ones. In the US they don't sell the spacesaver meant for the 3 series but only this 5 series kit, was thinking was because of the brake clearance issue and might be the solution for you if not the same one as what you have?

OEM BMW E60 5 Series Emergency Wheel/Tire Set. We've reassembled the kit 36110308889 with the exact components it originally came with as pn 36110308889 is now discontinued and no longer available. Set includes genuine BMW: space saver wheel (4x17 ET:18) and tire (135/80R17 - NOT mounted/balanced), oddments tray, articulated car jack, jack crank, wedge, and bracket. *This set ships at a 50.00 flatrate within the US. **Using this wheel/tire set on any other vehicle than an E60/61 5 Series is at your own risk. (yes, this is the kit that seems to work great on the E9x 3 Series vehicles!) ***The BMW trunk cargo net is also available on special and goes nicely with this set.

nice one cruvon. another option is to get yourself a wheel cover to avoid the tyre rubbing on other stuff you carry in the boot.

I bought one from ECS which I have on a 19" style 230 that I use as a spare when travelling away from civilisation.

it's even got a carry handle and only cost US$19 for two of them

Thanks Drew, did get myself a set of those, have to put them on. Looks nice on your wheel, you should get the felt covers to protect the alloy surface though just incase it gets scratched.

Essentially BMW sold me the wrong part, maybe the 5 series would fit as it's brake caliper clearance on the rear and it won't even get over the calipers on the front

According to BMW Sydney they are waiting to get RDA approval for the larger space saver, they may then swap it over for me, despite it being 2+ years old.
