Warranty or not

I have a used 2011 335i E92 Msport with 25k miles. I drive about 6 miles a day. The warranty end Jan 2015. I looked into the cost and one of the best and longest warranties would be about $3500-4k. This is my second BMW. My wife had a 1993 525i which didn't want to live anymore and was constantly being repaired by me until we ditched it.

If you were given the choice, would you throw down the 4k and get the 7 year 100k warranty, or given my low miles driving daily, relative confidence with auto repairs, keep the cash and roll the dice? Perhaps use the 4k to get some new rims/bbk/something interesting?

I hope to keep this car for a long long time (assuming I don't make a ton of $ somehow and can afford a new M3).

I appreciate any thoughts.

save that $4000 cash on the side and spend on repair as the need arises. i dont see the point of paying $4k so you can get coverage for 3 additional years (your car is 2011, so 7yr/100,000mi plan cover it up until 2018. Please correct me if my math is wrong). Given that you don't put crazy mileage on your car, chances are you won't run into any serious problem until after your 7yr/100,000mi plan expires. Just do the routine maintenance, oil chang every 6-7k miles, you should be okay.

I've also read on different threads that its best to put money into a emergency account. If you go with extended warranty you are pretty much rolling the dice. You may have issues you may not. But you don't, that's money down the drain. Some feel at ease getting an extended warranty though. I came from a Lexus GS and after reading these post have me paranoid about the beemer. They are machines made by machines. But I purchased knowing that it may some issues.

I have also seen those putting money aside threads, but also threads where the money put aside isn't enough to cover the expenses when something bad happens...

I took a gamble when my factory warranty ran out on my 2011 328xi and decided not to purchase an additional warranty. I'm not at all handy, but figured I could afford something major if I had to do it.

IMO there's no point of getting a warranty if you're only driving 6 miles a day. I drive around 55 miles a day and I still don't have warranty. At the end of the day, if you feel safer and more comfortable with warranty, than get it. If not, don't.

With that little bit of driving i doubt you will own the car long enough to see major issues, really water pump, coils, and fuel injectors are the main things to worry about and not super expensive if you can replace yourself.

In your case? No.

$3.5-4k for extended warranty though? Yeesh. Is that gold or platinum?

If you want to mod your car then do not get the warranty since it would probably be voided ( any type of tune may do the trick). I ve also read that the extended warranty does not cover everything . You should read more on it

I personally would not do it.
My warranty expires in Nov 2015 and I am not planning on purchasing any extended plans.
If and when something breaks I'll deal with it, no way I'd spend $3500-4000 for 3 years worth of warranty.

Should be far less than that even for an exclusionary warranty. Talk to your bank or credit union, not to the dealership. I paid $2400 for a 5yr/100,000mi full coverage warranty. For my particular warranty the mileage was 100,000 total miles but the 5 years was from the date of purchase.

I treat the warranty like car insurance. I don't expect to get into an accident, but I realize that if I do the $200 a month or so that I pay for my premium is far less than the cost of the accident. So if I spend $2400 per year on insurance and don't use it at all, I don't consider it $2400 thrown away.

i rolled the dice and said nothing would happen to me. Was going strong until brake module went, and was $2500. Every little thing on these cars cost lots and lots of money. They are not hondas that can be fixed in your backyard.(certain aspects) They need coding and lots of computer work that are very expensive.

GO warranty if you really want to keep the car. These cars are not very reliable in the first place.

OP, you drive so few miles that you run out of time before you get anywhere near the miles.

$3500 seems high unless it's a BMW warranty that is the "platinum level" and covers all systems.

I would probably take the $4k and put it away and wait for repairs.

You are in Ca. so you get the turbo warranty and fuel pump warranty.
Anything else is much less unless it's the water pump and that is about $1200.

I would gamble.
I bought warranty but my car has 100k miles and is a 2008.

My thoughts...for 6 miles a day why not just ride a bicycle.

But seriously, I agree with the person that said just keep that money in the bank for when repairs are needed.

I spent about 1300 on my 06 to go to 7/100. I got a brake job out of the deal. Now it seems every time I get in the car (wife's daily) another freaking chime goes off and I have something else to repair. Having a great local indy literally at the end of the block is a godsend.

The door lock went out on the driver side. Got the set an wife found somebody else to install them while we were away for the weekend. The day the wife gets in after fixing that, she smashes the rearview off, and I have to drive to Bakersfield with a droopy mirror that a huge quantity of electrical tape couldn't keep in place in that heat.

Still wish I hadn't spent that 1300. . .

Last year I bought the Easy Street warranty from Route 66 for $2400.

4 years / 48k miles $0 ded.

It was on a 2007 335i w/ 78k miles.

My local indie repair place spoke highly of them and my local CU carried them.

Penfed Credit Union also carries them and they are nationwide.
