Alpine Nav unit is dead..please help

Hello i have a 2006 325i with the alpine nav unit i believe it's called idrive? Sorry i'm a newbie to the newer bmw's.. It was working fine then today it randomly went to the bmw start up for about 20 seconds and then went to a faded then black screen. I've read threads about it being a battery issue? I was leaning towards this since it's over six years old being built in 09/2006. The replacement is BEYOND expensive, contacted bmw of Murrieta & they wants 1300 plus a 500 core fee.. Any recommendations or ideas of what may be causing this?

Cheers
Nick
