E90 Dual Side Exit Exhaust

Hey guys, I'm new to this site so I guess I'm introducing myself a bit here too... I'm Ian, from Edmonton, AB, Canada. Recently graduated from university, had my old car's engine die (spun a cam bearing in a bad way, ugh) and promptly purchased a BMW. I know the 323i isn't exactly a race horse but that's ok, it's my first car to hit the 200HP mark, and make it to 100km in under 12 seconds, besides I just started my career so I can't quite afford that M3 yet!

Anyway, I can't leave this car stock (already moded it a bit and did some coding) and since performance isn't the main focus of my mods, I want to make this car really visually unique. Which brings me to the topic... Side exit exhaust...

My thoughts:

1. Has anyone tried this on the E9x chassis? Yes, I have searched both Google and the forums but nothing has come up other than E30's. I was thinking of exiting the exhaust about 6" or so behind the rear wheels, maybe even farther back.

2. Obviously there is no point in doing single side exhaust, so a dual exhaust conversion would need to take place. (According to RealOEM the 09 E90 323i N52B25A engine uses identical exhaust to the 328i)

3. I have done a lot of research into the OEM performance exhaust and the AA exhaust, I like the exhaust notes of both but I doubt the ones for the 328 would be a good starting point, maybe a conversion to 335 or M exhaust, then custom tips? Obviously stock rear muffler would not work, so aftermarket only. Edit: Apparently Alberta Legislation has nothing about removing cats, so a secondary cat delete would be included with this

4. Filling/painting of the OEM exhaust port in the bumper would be required as well as cutting new holes. Also custom hangers would be a must.

Right now I'm just considering doing this, still not sold on the idea so any feedback/flaming from haters is appreciated & welcome. Please no "get a 328/335" comment's, as I mentioned earlier this is what I can afford right now while still allowing a comfortable budget for modding & actually having a life. If you have something negative to say, make it creative and entertaining!

Thanks.

I am tired from studying for midterms so I'll be nice and just say that I don't think I'd personally like the looks of it. I do not know of anyone doing this or even talking about it. If you do decide to take this on I'll subscribe for results.

It would be interesting to see. I suggest photoshop to get an idea before anything. I have a 323i and I have Euro intake, primary cat delete and secondary cat delete. Crappy part is I seem to have an 07 which could be the 170hp engine or 200hp engine based on production date. I got the 170hp engine. weeeeaaaak. You could definitely make it peppy with tune, cat deletes and such.

As for the exhaust I don't think you are going to fit an oem style muffler with exits behind the wheel without some seriously intricate bends. Maybe think of no muffler and custom piping or some other small mufflers like flowmaster hp2's.

Good idea, and some good points. This summer I'm planning on getting the AA tune

Photoshopped image... not the best exhaust tips but whatever. It does look a little goofy with those tips I have to admit haha

take the tips in a bit more and maybe a more aggressive bumper like an m3 rep would work for the overall design. You are going to have to go all out aggressive if you do this to make the whole car flow.

You should check out the ESS E92 M3 beast from Norway to get some ideas. It has side pipes but on the side skirts.

Interesting idea, but I see no reason to go to so much trouble to simply move exhaust exit point a foot from where it already is

Unless it's just to say you did it, & have something no one else has

Personally, I don't think it looks right on our cars - but it's your car

Should be EZ enough as far as plumbing goes - just use dual exhaust setup with muffler deletes both sides & direct tips to sides.

Hardest part will be the cutout in the fender and making it look good (not just a cut edge) - this will be your biggest hurdle, & if it looks bad it will ruin the looks of the entire car...

Yeah I agree with you there. Also, as mentioned earlier a whole body kit would be needed to add that aggressive look. Can't really justify 3+ grand to make an exhaust mod fit at this point, I think I'll just go with the PE or magnaflow or something with a 2nd cat delete
