Timing chain E90 1.8D
Hello all. I have a 1.8D Auto M Sport. Car build date was June 09. I know there was a cut off date when BMW carried out a modification to these always failing chains. Can anyone tell me if my car falls into the safe, or not safe arena.
Further to that every time I start the car a bulb failure wearing sound along with a bulb failure warning. I have checked and checked and there is no bulbs failed. This is anywhere. Anybody know how to get rid of this annoying warning. |

I was in the same boat with my 318d so I've taken bmw extended warrenty out for piece of mind. As for the bulb out I'm guessing yours is lci? Are all the LEDs working in the rear indicators? I had the same issue and I had 3 LEDs out in the cluster

As for the bulb warning, you probably have got a bulb out. For instance, there are two brake light bulbs per side. Are you sure they are both working? If all bulbs are working then it would be down to the bulb contacts corroding and require a clean up, or replacement units if moisture has got in.

I think being 06/2009 build date you are in a safer bracket.
Engines built 03/2007 to 05/2009 are the 'at risk group'. However, you need to put this in perspective. I don't know the official figures but there seems to be plenty more people who haven't experienced timing chain problems than people who have. Engines post 05/2009 have upgraded parts. You can still hear the timing chain rattle however, but even less of these fail. People slate the N47 but its actually a very good 4cyl engine in terms of power and economy. |

When you get the bulb warning hold the BC button in on the left stalk until it displays a CC-ID code
Then google the code and it will tell you what bulb it is |

Here is my very recent experience with my 2010 320d 120k and went into the garage and was diagnosed with chain on its way out and dmf needs replacing, full BMW service history and motorway miles. £6k bill with £5k for chain, can probably get it down to £3k at a Indy, but either way it's a lot of money. BMW refused goodwill because of mileage, so if it was me, I would get a warranty for piece of mind. My only saving grace is the car is still owned by the lease company, although I did want to buy it due to the epic spec I had.

With regard to the bulb failure, mine showed up and it was the fog light, even tho they weren't on at the time. Just a thought, check everything even if it's not on at the time.
