Man, that's just awful. I don't think there's a car on the planet where, without something being massively wrong, you can SET THE ENGINE ON FIRE simply by aggressively driving it. You know, and not ramming it into things. Or aggressively driving it through a fire.

Although I do have to say, they're certainly right about it overheating. It clearly overheated your bumper right off!

Wow I can't believe that decision.
Please take legal action, and sue the hell out of everyone. Everyone!!

Keep in mind that he is in the UK. If you sue someone in the UK and do not win, you have pay the other sides legal fees. In the US this would have been settled months ago as it is much easier/less risky to sue.

I generally agree with the Euro system as they are much less litigious than we are, but in this case I hope the OP sues.

OP, did you ever find out the cause of this??

Just bought a 2010 335D at the insurance auction that had a fire in the same spot. Would like to know what the cause of this is on these cars.....

I'm carrying a fire extinguisher on me when the car is done!!

I also just found this - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-17514172 but that has nothing to do with the 3 series. Anyone ever experience or heard of such a case?!
I had the same thing happen to me last month. My car started sputtering and I smelled fuel. I pulled over - waited 30 minutes a started the car. Poof the car went up in flames. I think it was a bad injector stuck open.

I second that. Have seen a handful of these threads and a few more cars at the insurance auctions with this damage... Would really like to know what the cause of these fires is.

Hopefully this photo works. I realize this post hasn't been updated in a while however I would like to bring awareness to BMW owners I had a very similar problem with my 2010 e90 323i randomly catching fire as well; in my case it resulted in total car loss.
