'Thump' sound from break when reversing
Hello fellow BMW owners! Hoping you guys could help me out before I take my car in to the dealer. Everytime i reverse for some reason (it seems like the passenger side front break) makes a 'thump' noise. This happens when i press on the breaks of course, you hear it. I had my front breaks changed about 3 months ago, and this has been occuring ever since, or maybe even before but barely noticed it since it doesnt happen while I'm driving. This only happens when I'm reversing back and forth or in nutro sometimes rolling back before i put it into first gear. Any ideas what it could be? Bad break pads? I even had my rotors replaced that same day when they changed the front breaks. My rear breaks are about 20% and am going to change them soon, but thinking about changing all 4 again. Any feedback or resolution would be helpful. I have still been driving the car with no issues, no sensors coming on, no lights at all, all seems fine, just that dam noise!

I had the same "thump" you're experiencing. After getting my brake pads and rotors replaced they forgot to tighten one bolt that holds the caliper to the bracket. I would go in and make sure those are tighten correctly.

Oh really? And it only happens while reversing and just going back and forth slowly? Also occurs in neutral for me as well, did you experience the same thing? Btw mines a 2012 335i.. Basically brand new! Thanks for your help.

I found this video that will give you a better idea on which bolts im talking about, the ones he mentions at about 2:10 he calls them the "caliper bracket bolts" hope that solves your issue. |

Normal. Floating caliper design.
