It's only about 4-5 days all winter that get really bad. Those days I just leave her in the garage and drive another car. This winter has been really bad, but the city has been much better then past winters regarding clearing the snow.

Was it particularly because he was in E92? Is E90 better in any way? or just all to do with rear wheel drive combined with low ground clearance ..

Thing I've noticed most: How low the car (coupe) is!
I get around fine -- mostly following the tracks of other vehicles -- but my underbody ends up scraping the icy ridges in the middle of the road.

My E93 with Dunlop M3's is in the garage, only been out twice all winter so I really don't know how does it handle in snow. I put winter tires on that car to use as a back up just in case one of the other twos are down for whatever reason. My wife and I both work so we need two cars all the time. I drive a FWD mini van with very soft Blizzak WS-50 and absolutely no problem in any snow or ice condition. My wife drives the 530Xi with Dunlop M3's and she made it home with no trouble, just took longer time becasue of the traffic.

Went from an Audi A6 Quattro previously to a 530Xi, both with winter tires, my impression is that the Xi allows more slide than the Audi. It's more fun in a way but it does not give the same level of rock-solid feeling as in the Audi.

When I used to drive stick shift in the snow I used to start at as high a gear as possible, some times even 3rd or 4th, to avoid wheel spin. Just take it easy so it is not too hard on the clutch. I also used to gear down to slow and to stop whenever possible, and use the brakes as little as possible. In an automatic I gear down a lot too and often put the gear in neutral while braking to stop when it is really slippery.

Sorry, don't want to be rude, but if you were sliding all over the place and going ~10km/h, then why, WHY were you driving in the left lane?! Well, second left, but still!

That's why my wife was cursing like I never saw her doing it before when she came back home from work that day, she was on her Legacy GT, and she said, that she honestly hates slow moving bimmers and mercs, blocking the whole traffic

^ I'm going to say it's because the left lane is usually used the most. Therefore in a snowstorm, going to be tracked out making it the easiest lane

I wonder - why left lane used the most?! Isn't it because everybody goes there even though it's supposed to be a FASTEST lane?!

till today, I had my summer tires on and it was alright with the xi, but the breaking was the scarry part. Once, to just test the summer tires, I was going about 50 on an iced up empty road, then i slammed the breaks and the car kept on sliding forward for about 30 or so meters. It was scary as hell. After that I ordered my winter tires and they just arrived today. I got them on and they are awesome. XI + 3D Dunlop SP's = the perfect winter car. I'll post pics of my car with the new rims soon. Here are the spec for now:
(I got them from tirerack)
3D Dunlop SP's : 235/40/VR18 XL x4
and MSW Type 12 Machined black.

The rims look kind of bad with the big ass wheel gaps, but they are growing on me slowly....

In that particular section, I was getting more traction, so I was going roughly 60-80km/hr. There weren't any cars behind me, so I wasn't causing any trouble. In the really bad section, I was staying on the left side because everyone else was....the right side was brutal, and there were a lot of bimmers/lexus/mercs stuck there. No one could move anyways as it was grid locked, so I wasn't creating havoc lol I'm usually the one that curses over ppl that don't understand the rules of the road

+1

Drives me nuts, but I have to admit, they seem to just plow the left lane when they had that snow storm on a weekend.

You can't go any faster regardless of which lane you are in anyway...
Even with xi and snows (or in your case, a Legacy GT), you have to be careful with the idiots who may slide right into you. Most of the vehicles that goes into the ditches are SUVs...

That's why i have the LSD + winter tires. It keeps the car centered and much safer. Before, without the LSD, i would be able to hang out the rear-end into the other lane. I go up steep mountain roads now and my car stays straight pushing from both sides and i pass 4x4's (probably without snow tires) that are all over the road trying to keep up.
