Yes this has been my experience as well. The DME from Norway that I read today fell into the IJE0S template like my USDM car. Only some of the mapping values (like cat conversion thresholds) differed. Make sense since different cars from different parts of the world have to comply to different standards!

This is very interesting... I'm also very interested in 6AT and DCT programming. I'd like to see the DCT be able to finally use the clutch packs out there.

So with this project, will there be a preferred tuning software like tunerpro?

If its all XML based, then suffices to say that ANY tuning suite should work. TunerPro, TunerCat ... etc.

We will also need a checksum correction plugin or maybe the flashing software rombinhood is developing has that capability?

Yes, this will be required in some form. Either a plugin or something else.

The software i've written takes care of the checksum. It will also internally preview the modified ROM file before the write process to determine if it's compatible with the DME. I have addressed everything I could think of in terms of writing errors and DME bricking. I'm sure more updates will be required as more and more people test this. But at this time, things are quite stable and risk-free. The only real concern is system voltage during the read/writing processes. I've confirmed that voltage can drop as low as 5v during the read without any loss of comms. I've been too risk-adverse to test the same during a write process. Regardless, I think using an inexpensive 20amp plug-in battery charger would be a good idea for those with aging batteries.

As trbolexis said, since this is open source, you can use any map editing software you feel most comfortable with. I was really surprised by how many free open source map editors there are out there. And some of them are exceptionally well designed and executed.

In all fairness, Cobb has done an excellent job in bringing a user-friendly portable flashing device to the market. Their handheld is a extremely well engineered solution. The release of any OS alternative by no means diminishes what they have accomplished, and will continue to accomplish, in the market. I think both options can peacefully coexist and evolve over time. The customer wins either way.

Thanks but I think we are in good shape now with ROM data collection. Right now my colleagues and I are just working out hardware and future function details. There is already a good group of people working diligently on XML file creation

Is there any sort of a failsafe where the software you've written will stop what it's doing in a low voltage situation and resume once battery voltage has gotten back to safe levels? The reason I ask is for those of us who have stuff hardwired that run even when the car is in deep sleep.

I think Cobb has such a failsafe.

I have lost system power during a write using rombinhood's flash tool and was able to recover the dme just by re-establishing system voltage and writing again.

Bet that made you nervous for a few minutes! I never really think twice when I'm flashing map changes to our Pectel SQ6. It's a bad habit even though we've never had issues.

This sounds very mature already. Github?

I'd live to see the PPK definitions and the difference between it and my stock definitions.

Thank you for the offer JP. We were thinking that since this development is going to be largely community-driven, that maybe it would make most sense to ask the e90post admin to set up a dedicated open source tuning forum. Maybe someone can be given privileges to set up sticky threads with downloads, updated XDFs, etc,. Just a thought....

Fixed for you.

No reason to have a chip in the dongle AND in the handheld...

Subscribed...not certain how I missed this a couple of weeks ago. It was just a matter of time for open source to be introduced to the community.
